Bamidbar 2 תרל”א
במדרש ע”פ ויעשו כן בני ישראל כו’ שריחקו ונתנו מקום ללוים.
The Medrash Rabbah (explains why the tribe of Levi was not counted together with the rest of Bnei Yisrael. The personal guard of the King is separate and different to the rest of the king’s army and shouldnt be counted together. Therefore the tribe of Levi was counted separately and from a much younger age.) The Midrash says that the rest of Bnei Yisrael who made space for the Tribe of Levi to encamp around the Mishkan were given special reward for that.
אף כי בוודאי הי’ בתוך בני ישראל אנשים גדולים במעשיהם מקטנים שבלוים.
Even though there are definitely people in the tribe of Israel Who were greater than the less righteous of the Levi’im (so why are all of Levi given special attention)?
אך צריך אדם לידע ולהאמין כי אין כל מעשיו יכולין להכריע נגד בחירת השי”ת.
However a person needs to know and believe that all of one’s actions cannot change the will of HaShem
ולזאת יכול כל אדם להיבטל לכלל ישראל ע”י שיודע שעיקר כח ישראל שבחר השי”ת בנו.
And to this end any person can nullify himself to the general populace-klal yisrael, through the realisation that the main strength of Yisrael comes from HaShem having chosen us
ואף כי בוודאי מה שאדם מכניע ועובד ביגיעה זהו עיקר רצונו ית’.
Even though when a person humbles himself and serves HaShem with toil, he is fulfilling the primary will of HaShem
אבל לא לחשוב שעי”ז יוכל להתקרב להשי”ת.
However one shouldnt thiink that iii is thought that action that he can become closer to HaShem
וכל העבודות בטלים נגד בחי’ הבחירה שבחר השי”ת בנו.
Because all effort of man is completely nullified to the concept that HaShem has chosen us
ואיך יתגאה אף על הפחות שבישראל.
And (if so) how can a person possibly become haughty even above the lowest (least righteous) Jew
ובאמת מה שריחקו הי’ סיוע אל הלוים.
And the truth is that that the Bnei Yisrael distanced themselves from the Mishkan and made space for the Levi’im o encamp, was a help for the Levi’im
הרי כתיב מתוך בני ישראל.
As it says that the Levi’im were chosen from within the Bnei Yisrael
שגם קרבת הלוים הי’ בסיוע בנ”י.
that the ability of the Levi’im to come close was through the help of the tribe of Yisrael
ע”י שנתנו להם מקום ובטלו רצונם לרצון השי”ת להיות עבודתם ע”י בחיריו:
Through the Bnei Yisrael making space and (essentially) nullifying their will to the will of HaShem that the work (of the Mishkan) should be done through those that HaShem has chosen.
