Vayishlach
“Your name will no longer be Yaakov, rather it will be Yisrael, for you have fought with beings and people and you have prevailed” (Bereishis 32:29).
These two names are what Bnei Yisrael meritted to be called. They represent the body and the neshama. (Yaakov represents the perfection of the body – ‘Yud’ representing chohma all the way through the body till the eikev- they heel. And Yisrael represents the perfection of the neshama “Li Rosh”).
For one needs to perfect one’s bofy so much so that the power of the neshama is clearly reflected in him, and then he is called “Yisrael” (just as Yaakov had perfected his body).
(It is due to this perfection that) Yaakov was able to fight the angel. For the neshama of man is greater than the neshama of angels (as it says that HaShem blew from Himself a neshama into man), however the body of an angel is greater than that of man’s, for our body is involved in this world.
However since Yaakov had perfected his body so much so that he was a “Chariot” for the presence of HaShem in this world, so his body was actually holy just as his neshama!
Therefore even with the most mundane part of his body, he was able to fight the angel.
This can therefore be the meaning of the words: Your name shall no longer be Yaakov. For he had perfected his body so much that even the body which is (usually) called Yaakov, no longer has those physical bodily traits, and is actually now spiritual just as the neshama.
Therefore it states afterwards (Bereishis 33:18) And Yaakov came ‘Shalem’”. The equality of the body and the neshama is called “Shalom”. This is because in each and every Yisrael there is the constant battle between the body and neshama, and in as much as one perfects the body, this leads to the perfection and equality within himself.
Therefore Shabbos is called “Shalom”, for on Shabbos there is an uplifting of all things physical which is a taste of the world to come, where in the future, the bodies will be perfected just as the neshamot. And this is present on Shabbos, where there is somewhat of a perfection of each person’s body. It is in relation to their preparation in the days of the week that they merit an “extra soul”, which is so called, for it is the spreading of that power into the body.
