Jacob’s Mission and Eternity Vayishlach תרנ”ט 1
בפסוק לא יעקב כו’ כי אם ישראל כו’.
“In the verse: ‘Not Jacob… but Israel.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the change of name signifies a change of identity and mission.
כי השם של האדם הוא אשר נשלח ע”ז לתקן ענין זה והאדם נקרא מהלך ומלאכים עומדים כי האדם מתקן מעשיו מעט מעט וכשבא לגמור את השליחות צריך להיפטר מן העולם.
“For a person’s name is connected to the mission for which he is sent. A human is called one who ‘moves,’ while angels are ‘stationary,’ because a person corrects his deeds little by little, and when he comes to complete his mission he must depart from the world.”
The name defines the task. Humans grow through gradual effort; completion of that task marks the natural end of earthly life.
כמ”ש חז”ל תחתונים א”י לעמוד בתפקידיו של הקב”ה.
“As the Sages said: those below cannot fully stand in the service of the Holy One.”
Human beings on earth cannot attain perfect fulfillment of divine service in life.
וכל זה אחר חטא אדה”ר א”א להתקן לגמרי רק ע”י המיתה.
“And all this is because after Adam’s sin it is impossible to be completely repaired except through death.”
Full rectification is a post‑Edenic impossibility during life itself.
והנה יעקב אע”ה כאשר נלחם עם המלאך וגבר אותו.
“Now, Jacob our forefather, when he fought with the angel and overcame him…”
This event signals a spiritual transformation.
זה סימן שבא לבחי’ עומד כמלאך.
“This was a sign that he had reached the level of ‘standing,’ like an angel.”
Jacob attained a state of spiritual completion associated with angels.
היינו שתיקן כל השליחות בשלימות לפי שתיקן חטאו של אדה”ר כדאיתא שופרי’ דיעקב מעין שופרי’ דאדם.
“Meaning that he had completed his mission entirely, for he had rectified Adam’s sin, as stated: the beauty of Jacob resembled the beauty of Adam.”
His perfection corresponded to a restoration of primordial wholeness.
והי’ צריך להסתלק מן העולם.
“And he ought to have departed from the world.”
Such completion normally signals the end of earthly life.
אבל נתן לו הקב”ה שם ישראל שנמסר לו שליחות ועבודה חדשה בעולם.
“But the Holy One gave him the name Israel, assigning him a new mission and service in the world.”
The new name bestowed a new task, allowing him to remain alive.
והרי הוא למעלה מבחי’ מלאך שאין מלאך אחד עושה שתי שליחות והוא עשה ב’ שליחות בעולם.
“Thus he is above the level of an angel, for one angel does not perform two missions, whereas he performed two missions in the world.”
His dual missions elevate him beyond angelic limitation.
וזה שרמזו חז”ל יעקב אבינו לא מת.
“This is what the Sages hinted at: ‘Jacob our father did not die.’”
His essential spiritual identity remains alive.
הגם דבשם ישראל מצינו מיתה.
“Even though regarding the name Israel we do find death mentioned.”
The mortal dimension pertains to the name Israel.
אבל שם יעקב שתיקנו בשלימות בעוה”ז ונשאר בחיים א”כ יעקב אבינו לא מת.
“But the name Jacob, which he completed fully in this world and remained alive in, therefore Jacob our father did not die.”
The perfected identity of Jacob persists eternally.
והנה אמרו חז”ל המענג השבת זוכה לנחלת יעקב כמ”ש והאכלתיך נחלת יעקב אביך.
“The Sages said: one who delights in Shabbat merits the inheritance of Jacob, as it is written: ‘I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the earth and feed you the inheritance of Jacob your father.’”
The Shabbat experience grants access to Jacob’s enduring spiritual state.
כי בשבת כתיב אל יצא איש ממקומו נמצא שזוכין בשבת לבחי’ עומדין.
“For regarding Shabbat it is written: ‘Let no man go out from his place,’ thus on Shabbat one merits the level of ‘standing.’”
Shabbat elevates a person from movement to angelic standing.
והוא בכח הנשמה יתירה הבאה מלמעלה והיא פריסת סוכת שלם.
“And this is through the extra soul that comes from above, which is the spreading of the canopy of peace.”
The added Shabbat soul brings wholeness and protection.
שבעוה”ז חסר השלימות כנ”ל שתחתונים אינם יכולים לעמוד בתפקידיו בשלימות.
“For in this world wholeness is lacking, as said above, that those below cannot fully stand in His service.”
Shabbat compensates for the inherent incompleteness of earthly existence.
אבל בשבת מתנה טובה לישראל ויש להם חלק בבחי’ השלום.
“But on Shabbat, a good gift to Israel, they have a share in the quality of peace.”
Shabbat grants a foretaste of perfected harmony.
נחלת יעקב שלא מת וגמר בעוה”ז שליחותו כנ”ל.
“The inheritance of Jacob, who did not die and completed his mission in this world, as explained above.”
Shabbat connects us to Jacob’s eternal completion.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob reached angelic completion but was granted a new mission through the name Israel, making him greater than an angel. Shabbat grants access to Jacob’s eternal, perfected state—the inheritance of one who ‘did not die.’
