Spiritual Mission and Divine Identity Vayishlach

“In the verse: ‘And God appeared again to Jacob … your name is Jacob … Israel shall be your name.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that God’s second appearance to Jacob establishes the shift from ‘Jacob’ to ‘Israel.’

“For a person’s name corresponds to the specific matter he was created to repair.”

A human name reflects the spiritual mission uniquely entrusted to that individual.

“Therefore the wicked forget their names in the grave.”

The wicked, having failed their mission, lose the spiritual identity bound to that mission.

“And Jacob—not only did he fulfill what his name required…”

Jacob completed the task associated with the name ‘Jacob.’

“But he also merited that his name be called ‘Israel.’”

He ascended to an additional, higher identity: Israel.

“For he had already perfected the name Jacob.”

This higher name was granted only after the first mission was completed.

“Thus: ‘God appeared again’—a term of addition—signifies an intensified revelation, such that the name Jacob was too small to contain the increased holiness; therefore he was called Israel.”

The extra revelation required a broader identity capable of holding greater sanctity.

“Therefore, ‘a man wrestled with him,’ resembling an angel, for an angel performs its mission in complete perfection.”

The wrestling encounter reflects the confrontation with perfected, angelic mission-work.

“And thus, with each mission an angel’s name changes.”

Names shift with each assignment because they express the task itself.

“And a human being engages in his mission throughout his life until he completes it and departs to the upper world.”

Human life mirrors this angelic model, though spread across years and growth.

“And Jacob, having completed his name, was given another name.”

His elevation to ‘Israel’ marked achievement of a second-level identity.

“And this itself is the aspect of the inheritance of Jacob.”

This expanded identity is connected to Jacob’s unique spiritual inheritance.

“An inheritance without boundaries.”

Jacob’s inheritance transcends limitation.

“This is the aspect of an extra soul.”

A boundless spiritual capacity akin to the ‘neshamah yeteirah.’

“And this is the meaning of ‘God appeared again.’”

The second revelation signifies expansion beyond normal human measure.

“For what a person is created for has a particular measure and limit.”

Each soul ordinarily has defined boundaries to its mission.

“But Jacob prepared for the Children of Israel an inheritance without boundaries, an expanded soul without fixed limit or measure.”

Jacob bequeathed a supra-measured spiritual capacity to his descendants.

“And a taste of this the Children of Israel merit on Shabbat, as it is written: ‘I will feed you the inheritance of Jacob.’”

Shabbat grants access to this boundaryless spiritual inheritance.

Summary: Jacob perfected the mission represented by his original name and therefore received the higher name Israel, reflecting expanded holiness. This elevation embodies the limitless inheritance he bequeathed to Israel, glimpsed each Shabbat as a form of boundless, extra soul.
