Hanukkah’s Eternal Spiritual Light For תרל”ו 1
(Night 1) The miracle of Chanukah was in the salvation of the body.
The Sefat Emet begins by distinguishing the physical rescue of the Jewish people from the Greeks as one dimension of the Chanukah miracle.
And the miracle of the lights was in holiness.
The lighting of the Menorah reflects a spiritual miracle, revealing divine holiness in Israel.
And the Sages chose this aspect more; therefore they established Hallel and thanksgiving, not feasting and rejoicing.
The sages emphasized the spiritual miracle, expressing it through verbal praise rather than physical celebration.
For the principle is that when there is a favorable time and days of miracles, those who receive can absorb the illumination in their hearts, so that the miracle becomes fixed for generations.
Miraculous periods allow spiritual receptivity; what is absorbed then can become a permanent spiritual inheritance.
Therefore, through Israel’s choosing this then, they caused the miracle to become eternal, as an illumination of holiness within the soul of Israel, as explained above.
By responding to the miracle with spiritual focus, Israel helped establish the holiness of Chanukah as a lasting inner light.
Therefore, for this very reason we praise, that the Holy One, blessed be He, helped them for our sake; and this is what is meant by “and for all this we give thanks,” as explained elsewhere.
We thank God not only for their salvation but because it created a spiritual inheritance that still benefits us.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanukah contains both physical and spiritual miracles, with the sages emphasizing the latter through Hallel. Because Israel chose to respond spiritually, the light of Chanukah became an eternal illumination within the Jewish soul.
