Vayeshev

Yosef refused the overtures of Potiphar’s wife (Bereishit 39:8-9) “But he refused. He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master gives no thought to anything in this house, and all that he owns he has placed in my hands. He wields no more authority in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except yourself, since you are his wife. How then could I do this most wicked thing, and sin before HaShem?”
We can learn from Yosef’s words a method at beating the evil inclination. That HaShem could have prevented us from sinning and yet He allows us to sin and go against His will. This in itself is enough of a reason not to sin. (Just as Yosef said, that his master had trusted him completely, how can he betray his master).
Now it would seem that Yosef who said all this to Potiphar’s wife was saying this in order to convince her not to be influenced by the temptation. Because it already says that Yosef refused her. And the word used for refusal is וימאן which has a connotation of not having the temptation at all.
[we can also explain that it was through Yosef’s refusal that he was able to step back and say to her the above statement (That he could not betray his master due to the trust he placed in him). As it says “He refused” and then “he said to her etc.” It was because of the initial refusal that he could get a correct perspective of the situation.’
