Angels Within Human Actions Vayishlach

“The name Israel, for you have striven, etc.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the very name “Israel” reflects the spiritual power of striving and overcoming.

“And surely this power remains in every Jew, for all the worlds depend on his actions.”

Every individual Israelite inherits Jacob’s spiritual capacity; his deeds affect all realms of creation.

“And in the Zohar: ‘His angels He will command for you’ — this refers to the good and evil inclinations.”

The ‘angels’ guarding a person are interpreted as the forces of inner inclination, both positive and negative.

“For every inner will is a point of vitality from God sent into this world for a specific purpose, and it is called an angel.”

An ‘angel’ is understood as a divine spark of intention placed within a person to fulfill a mission.

“And there are angels of the Diaspora and of the Land of Israel, as the Sages said: ‘And the angels met him.’”

Different spiritual forces operate in different realms—some tied to the Diaspora, others to the sanctity of the Land.

“It may be said that the weekdays, when labor is permitted, serve to extract and refine the hidden vitality within physical actions, and these are called the angels of the Diaspora.”

Weekday activity reveals the divine life-force embedded in worldly tasks; these forces relate to the realm of ‘outside the Land.’

“And it is stated that they were actual angels.”

Some sources maintain that the angels Jacob encountered were literal celestial beings.

“And how could he send to Esau holy angels?”

The question arises: how can holy angels be assigned a mission toward Esau?

“Thus it may be said that they were, in a hidden manner, the angels of the Diaspora, as we find that angels can clothe themselves in physical form in this world.”

These angels were suited to worldly realms and could therefore engage with Esau via material disguise.

“And Shabbat, the day of rest, corresponds to the angels of the Land of Israel, when true desire is revealed in the heart of Israel, and through inner enthusiasm everything can be elevated.”

Shabbat brings a higher spiritual force, tied to the sanctity of the Land, enabling elevation of all weekday actions.

“And the aspect of ‘angel’ as a messenger applies only to matters distant from the sender Himself.”

A messenger is needed only when the mission concerns something removed from the divine source.

“And the matter must be performed through the intermediary of the messenger.”

The angel acts as the agent through which the divine intention is enacted in physical reality.

“So too all mitzvah-actions that are bound with physicality.”

Physical mitzvot also require an intermediary structure connecting the divine will to the material world.

“And even permitted and forbidden desires have an intended purpose for which one is sent into the world.”

Human desires, whether allowed or prohibited, are part of one’s divine mission and spiritual work.

“And when the purpose is completed, the mission returns to the One who sent it.”

Once a person fulfills the divine intention within an experience, its spiritual energy returns to its source.

“Therefore, the vitality within every thing is truly an angel assisting in the fulfillment of God’s will.”

All created vitality serves as a helper-angel, enabling divine intention to manifest.

“And this is ‘His angels He will command for you’ — that a person has the power to refine every action, separating it from mere physicality so it ascends to its root.”

The verse teaches that humans can uplift any deed, transforming physical acts into spiritual ascent.

The Sefat Emet teaches that ‘angels’ represent inner divine sparks and missions within worldly experience. Weekday activity refines hidden vitality, while Shabbat elevates. Every desire or action contains a divine purpose, and the life-force in all things acts as an angel helping to fulfill God’s will.
