Shemot
“In the verse: ‘I have surely remembered you and what was done to you in Egypt.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by addressing the double expression of remembrance in this verse.
“The word ‘et’ hints to the twenty‑two letters of the Torah, from alef to tav.”
The small word ‘et’ is interpreted as containing the entire alphabet, suggesting a totality of divine expression.
“And they are the configuration of all the worlds and all of creation.”
The letters are understood as the spiritual structure underlying existence itself.
“And according to the refinement of souls below, so is prepared for them a combination and configuration within the twenty‑two letters.”
The spiritual state of human beings determines which letter‑combinations illuminate them.
“And Israel merited the true combination of the twenty‑two letters in the Torah of truth, which is the true configuration that includes all configurations.”
Israel’s connection to Torah grants access to the deepest unity of the letters.
“‘I have remembered you’—this refers to the ‘et’ that Israel repaired below.”
Human spiritual work completes and elevates the letters from below upward.
“And corresponding to this, the ‘what was done for you’ is repaired above for your needs.”
Divine response mirrors human refinement: as people repair below, heaven repairs above.
“And so it is in every individual, according to his preparation.”
Each person receives spiritual illumination proportionate to their inner readiness.
“All the more so for the collective of Israel.”
The nation as a whole experiences this dynamic in an amplified form.
“As it is said: ‘As in the days of your exodus from Egypt, I will show you wonders.’”
The future redemption mirrors the Exodus, but with even greater revelation.
“And just as through the exile of Egypt Israel merited the configuration of the twenty‑two letters of the Torah…”
The suffering of Egypt prepared Israel to receive the Torah’s full structure.
“So in the future we will merit the hidden light within the Torah.”
The ultimate redemption will reveal deeper dimensions of Torah.
“As it is written: ‘A new Torah will come forth from Me.’”
This new Torah refers to revelations now concealed.
“And this is the hint in the doubled remembrance: ‘I have surely remembered.’”
The repetition signals a double process—below and above.
“Meaning: you; the ‘et’ within you; and what is done for you.”
The Sefat Emet breaks the phrase into layers, each signifying a deeper spiritual interaction.
“The repair below and the repair above, as explained.”
Creation responds to human refinement; divine repair completes the process.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the doubled ‘I have remembered’ reflects the interplay between human refinement of the twenty‑two letters below and divine rectification above, leading ultimately to the future revelation of the hidden light of Torah.
