Passover

“In the verse: Six days you shall eat matzot, and on the seventh day there shall be an assembly.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the Torah distinguishes between the six days and the seventh, signaling a spiritual shift from process to completion.

“The essence of exile is dispersion, the inability to unify.”

Exile is defined not only as physical dislocation, but as fragmentation of the inner self and of the people.

“The purpose of redemption is when we come to unity, and this is completed on the seventh day, the assembly day.”

True redemption is expressed when all parts rejoin in oneness, symbolized by the communal gathering on the seventh day of Pesach.

“And this is attested by the Song, which they all recited with one mouth, unified words.”

The Song at the Sea reflects perfect national unity, where all voices merged into a single expression.

“And the six days represent the aspect of the Exodus, as the Midrash says that the Exodus was difficult, for it is the aspect of ‘turning from evil,’ escaping the bondage of the Other Side.”

The six days correspond to the struggle of breaking free from spiritual impurity—an arduous inner work.

“And this departure is different for each person, for the battle with the Other Side varies, as each has different flaws and thoughts.”

Each individual confronts unique internal obstacles during the process of liberation.

“Therefore, the bodies are divided.”

The physical distinctions between people reflect the diversity of their spiritual struggles.

“But on the seventh day is the aspect of ‘do good’ and accepting the yoke of Heaven, which they merited at the splitting of the sea.”

The seventh day marks not escape from evil, but a positive turning toward divine unity and sovereignty.

“Then they became one union, for each had a single desire toward our portion in Heaven; through this the souls became close, and it is called an assembly.”

Unity emerges when all individuals share the same spiritual intention, forming a single collective soul.

“And as I wrote in Parashat Shemot on the verse ‘all the soul…that came to Egypt, seventy souls.’”

The Sefat Emet refers to his earlier teaching that the Torah speaks of seventy individuals as a single soul.

“For at the descent into exile they had one soul and one will.”

The unity of Israel preceded their exile, serving as the basis for their survival within it.

“And it is written: ‘With seventy soul they descended.’”

The singular term teaches that despite being many, they were internally unified.

“And now: your children are like the stars of the heavens.”

Israel grows into a vast multitude, compared to the stars.

“Meaning: just as they descended with one soul and one will, so too—even though they multiplied like the stars of the heavens—they still had one soul and one will.”

Despite expansion into a diverse nation, the core unity of Israel remained intact.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the six days of Pesach represent the struggle of individual liberation, while the seventh day represents complete unity. Redemption culminates when all souls align in a single intention, restoring the oneness that characterized Israel at its beginning.
