Passover תרס”ב 11

בגמ’ הביאו לפני עומר בפסח שיתברכו לכם תבואה שבשדות.

“In the Gemara: they would bring the Omer on Passover so that the grain in the fields would be blessed for you.”

The Sefat Emet explains that the Omer offering serves to draw blessing onto the year’s grain, beginning specifically at Passover.

דבחטא הראשון כ’ ארורה האדמה ואין ארור מדבק בברוך.

“For in the first sin it was said: ‘Cursed is the ground,’ and the cursed cannot cleave to the blessed.”

Since the earth was cursed after Adam’s sin, it cannot naturally receive blessing until that curse is lifted.

לכן צריכין בנ”י להוציא האדמה מארר.

“Therefore Israel must remove the earth from its curse.”

Israel’s spiritual service has the power to release the earth from its original curse.

לפי שהם בני חורין יכולין להביא חירות לכל העולם.

“Because they are free people, they can bring freedom to the entire world.”

Having attained freedom in the Exodus, Israel can extend liberation to creation itself.

וע”ז כ’ אשריך ארץ שמלכך בן חורים.

“And concerning this it is written: ‘Happy are you, O land, whose king is freeborn.’”

The Sefat Emet reads this verse as hinting that the land is blessed when ruled by one who embodies freedom.

והדברים קו”ח אם נתאררה האדמה בעבור האדם.

“And this is a fortiori: if the earth was cursed on account of the human being…”

If human sin brought curse to the earth…

מכש”כ שע”י זכות האדם ניתן ברכה להאדמה.

“…then how much more so through the merit of the human being can blessing be given to the earth.”

…then human righteousness must be able to bring blessing back to it.

וז”ש שיתברכו לכם בשבילכם.

“And this is the meaning of ‘that they be blessed for you — because of you.’”

The blessing of the grain is drawn specifically through Israel’s merit.

וע”י החטא נתערב פסולת בתבואה כמ”ש וקוץ ודרדר תצמיח.

“And through the sin, refuse became mixed into the grain, as it is said: ‘Thorns and thistles it shall sprout.’”

Human sin introduced impurity and distortion into the growth of produce.

וע”י מצות העומר מתברר התבואה.

“And through the commandment of the Omer the grain becomes clarified.”

The Omer offering rectifies and refines the year’s produce.

וכן בכל המועדות יש ברכה באדמה.

“And so in all the festivals there is blessing upon the earth.”

Each festival brings a different form of agricultural blessing.

פסח תבואה.

“Passover — grain.”

Passover draws blessing to grain crops.

עצרת פירות האילן.

“Shavuot — fruit of the trees.”

Shavuot brings blessing to tree fruits.

וחג המים.

“And Sukkot — water.”

Sukkot brings blessing to rainfall and water sources.

ולכן הם ימי שמחה דכל הקללה הי’ בעצבון תאכלנה.

“Therefore they are days of joy, for the entire curse was ‘in sorrow shall you eat of it.’”

The festivals reverse the sorrow imposed as part of the primordial curse.

וע”י יצ”מ נבחרו בנ”י ויצאו מכלל ארור לברוך.

“And through the Exodus Israel was chosen and left the category of curse for blessing.”

Redemption transformed Israel’s spiritual status, enabling them to channel blessing.

מכלל עצבון לשמחה.

“From sorrow to joy.”

The shift from curse to blessing is expressed as a movement from grief to joy.

ושמחת המועדות עדות וזכר ליציאת מצרים.

“And the joy of the festivals is a testimony and remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt.”

The joy experienced on the festivals affirms the liberation that enables blessing to enter the world.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Omer and all festivals draw blessing to creation, reversing the primordial curse through Israel’s freedom and merit, with each festival channeling a distinct type of agricultural blessing as a remembrance of the Exodus.
