Passover

“And our Sages said that Shabbat is placed next to the Festivals to teach that one who keeps the Festivals is as though he kept the Shabbatot, and one who desecrates them, etc.”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the teaching that the connection between Shabbat and the Festivals shows their shared sanctity: observing the Festivals is considered an act of preserving Shabbat itself.

“And it seems that through the Festivals one receives the radiance of Shabbat.”

He explains that the Festivals serve as channels through which the unique spiritual illumination of Shabbat is drawn into the world.

“For it is taught regarding Shabbat: The Holy One said, ‘I have a precious gift in My treasury… go and inform them.’”

Shabbat is described as a hidden divine gift, accessible only through revelation from above.

“If so, Shabbat is the secret of God granted to those who fear Him.”

Thus Shabbat represents a concealed mystical knowledge reserved for those spiritually attuned.

“And the Festivals, called the Festivals of God, are the times when Israel cleaves to the knowledge of that hidden gift.”

The Festivals function as appointed times enabling Israel to access the inner secret embodied in Shabbat.

“Therefore they are called holy convocations, for holiness is something set apart, and this is Shabbat Kodesh.”

The holiness of the Festivals derives from the separateness associated with Shabbat itself.

“And in the Festivals the awareness of Shabbat’s radiance spreads forth.”

During the Festivals, the hidden light of Shabbat becomes more manifest and accessible.

“Therefore observing the Festivals is like observing the Shabbatot, as above.”

This interdependence clarifies why the Sages equate their observance.

“And since holiness is revealed in the Festivals, there is more praise (Hallel) in them than on Shabbat, whose holiness is hidden and concealed.”

The public recitation of Hallel on Festivals reflects their revealed holiness, contrasted with Shabbat’s inward, concealed sanctity.

“And the Festivals are testimony that Israel possesses attachment to what is above.”

The very structure of the Festivals serves as witness to Israel’s spiritual connection to higher realms.

“For the essence of the Festivals is that they are called the Festivals of God, and they are times when holiness is revealed above in the upper worlds more than at any other time of the year.”

Their cosmic significance is not only earthly; the Festivals correspond to special moments of heightened holiness in the upper worlds.

“And in those very times there occurs a revelation of holiness and salvation for Israel—our time of freedom, the giving of our Torah, our rejoicing.”

The historical sanctity of the Festivals mirrors the spiritual influx manifesting at those appointed times.

“This is testimony that Israel follows the heavenly order.”

The alignment of Israel’s observance with heavenly rhythms shows their attunement to divine governance.

“And this is the meaning of ‘the faith of Your times,’ that the times which shift above must make an impression upon the souls of Israel below.”

The changes in spiritual seasons above are meant to resonate within Israel, shaping their inner life.

“To be drawn after these times.”

Israel is called to align themselves with the divine timings that unfold in the higher realms.

“And the holiness renewed in the Festivals would not be revealed below were it not for the preparation made by Israel, who are vessels to receive these illuminations.”

The revelation depends on Israel’s spiritual readiness; without proper preparation, the light could not descend.

“Therefore it is written: ‘Which you shall proclaim.’”

The Festivals require Israel’s active proclamation to draw holiness into the world.

“Israel sanctifies the times.”

The sanctity of the Festivals arises through Israel’s role in establishing them, completing the cycle of heavenly and earthly holiness.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Festivals channel the hidden radiance of Shabbat into revealed holiness. Through preparation and proclamation, Israel becomes the vessel through which divine times manifest below, testifying to their connection to the higher realms.
