Shabbos Revealing Divine Presence

Bereishit · תרס"ב (1901) · Essay 1Share

In the Midrash: “And God finished on the seventh day.” What was the world lacking? Rest. When Shabbat arrived, the work was completed, as Rashi explains.

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that creation was incomplete until Shabbat brought the missing element: rest.

The idea is that the world is named for concealment, for nature covers the inner divine life-force, though in truth all creation exists only for His glory.

The world’s very name hints to hiddenness: divine life is obscured by nature, yet creation’s true purpose is solely God’s honor.

But one can recognize the Creator only through the constriction of nature; through His deeds He can be known, and through the concealment itself comes awareness of His divinity.

Paradoxically, the limits and concealments of nature become the very means by which God is revealed.

And Shabbat is the recognition of divinity, which is the purpose of creation and is called the purpose of heaven and earth.

Shabbat brings the ultimate clarity of God’s presence, fulfilling the aim of all existence.

This is the aspect of rest, which is the aspect of prophecy and divine inspiration, as it is written: “And the spirit of God shall rest upon him.”

The rest of Shabbat is not physical only; it mirrors the serenity that enables prophecy and divine spirit.

And so the Sages taught: “I found no rest except upon prophecy.”

Prophetic insight depends on the inner tranquility symbolized by Shabbat.

And this is the aspect of the extra soul, a taste of the World to Come, when all of God’s people will be prophets, as it is written: “Your sons and daughters shall prophesy.”

Shabbat grants an expanded soul, anticipating an era where divine awareness is universal.

Therefore work is forbidden to Israel on Shabbat, for the purpose of labor is to become a vessel for holiness and divine spirit to rest upon creation.

Work serves as preparation; Shabbat is the moment of receiving holiness.

All weekdays are preparation for Shabbat, and through work the divine spirit withdraws; this is called desecration of Shabbat.

Weekday activity creates distance, while Shabbat restores divine presence; violating it undermines this restoration.

Therefore through Shabbat and rest the work is completed, for this is the purpose of all labor.

Shabbat is the completion toward which all effort points.

Thus the Zohar writes: “One who fears Shabbat fears shame,” meaning a person must know that the purpose of his creation is that divine spirit and soul rest upon him.

Awareness of Shabbat’s sanctity brings awareness of one’s true spiritual purpose.

And that the body should yield to the inner essence; especially a Jew, who has a portion in the holy Shabbat, must ensure not to forget the essential due to the body’s material covering.

The Sefat Emet concludes: the physical self must not obscure the soul’s Shabbat-rooted purpose.

Summary: Shabbat completes creation by revealing the divine concealed in nature; it grants prophetic rest and an expanded soul. Weekday labor prepares for this revelation, and the Jew must ensure that bodily materiality does not obscure the inner divine purpose.
