Daily Struggle and Redemption
“With God’s help: Shemot, in brief, regarding what was already written.”
In the Midrash: “One whom He loves, He chastises early.”
The Sefat Emet opens with the principle that divine affection is expressed through spiritual discipline.
This means literally every day, as it is written: “And My rebuke is every morning.”
Daily challenges are seen as continual divine guidance.
And as the Sages said: a person’s inclination overpowers him daily, and all this is for the good, for through the effort at the beginning he later receives goodness in completeness.
Struggle refines a person and prepares him to receive spiritual wholeness.
And this is what is written: “These are the names…”—to reveal their belovedness even at the moment of descending into exile.
Even in exile, Israel remains cherished.
To show that it was not due to their lowliness.
Exile is not a punishment of rejection.
But rather: “One whom He loves, He chastises early.”
Exile itself is an expression of divine love.
And for everything they received reward.
Their endurance in exile generated great merit.
As it is written: “And they enslaved them with crushing labor,” meaning that besides the labor itself, they worked them with an evil heart and great hatred.
The oppression in Egypt was emotional and spiritual, not only physical.
So too afterward was the redemption and God’s drawing them close with extra love.
Great suffering prepared the way for great closeness.
As the verse says: “As they afflicted them, so they multiplied.”
Affliction generated increase—both physical and spiritual.
And every Jew has aspects of these processes every day; therefore we recall the Exodus daily and established it before Shema and prayer, for each day there is a renewal of the Forty‑Two (stages) through the power of the Ten Utterances.
Daily spiritual renewal mirrors the Exodus.
But there is also opposition, and we require redemption.
Inner obstacles parallel the forces of exile.
And afterward one feels the renewal of the Ten Commandments and the Torah, as the Midrash says that Torah can only be attained through suffering.
Struggle opens the way to revelation.
And this is what is written: “In a flame of fire from within the bush”—showing him that within the darkness of exile there is a great flame of the acceptance of Torah.
The burning bush symbolizes hidden spiritual fire within suffering.
But it cannot be received before the sufferings of exile, as it is written: “When you bring the people out…”
Only after exile can Israel stand at Sinai.
And Moses said: “Who am I… that I should bring them out?” and the Sages interpreted: what merit do they have?
Moses questioned Israel’s readiness for redemption.
Far be it that our teacher Moses, peace be upon him, should denounce Israel—whom God chose and for whom he devoted his life.
Moses’ question was not criticism; it was prophetic insight.
Rather, since he was designated for the mission…
His unique role gave him deeper understanding.
He understood the exile thoroughly.
He perceived the spiritual state of the people.
And he understood that they were not yet ready for redemption, for as long as exile prevails, the key to redemption is concealed.
Exile obscures the inner capacity for salvation.
And likewise Moses’ own level—as the designated redeemer—was concealed; therefore he said, “Who am I… and how shall I bring them out?”
Moses’ humility was part of the hiddenness of redemption.
And God answered him: “I will be with you… when you bring them out…”
Divine presence compensates for human insufficiency.
Meaning: darkness covers the earth.
Before redemption, spiritual darkness is pervasive.
And immediately when they leave exile they will be transformed upward, elevated, and established at Sinai, as written: “And I bore you on eagles’ wings…”
Redemption brings sudden spiritual ascent.
For they came quickly from Rameses to Sukkot.
The rapid journey symbolizes instant transformation.
All this hints at the levels through which they became, in a moment, different people.
Redemption reshapes identity at once.
And likewise we must hope in this bitter exile, not to despair, God forbid, when seeing our external and internal lowliness—that we seem unfit even for the smallest level of our ancestors—and wonder: how could we serve in the Temple or appear before God three times a year?
Our current spiritual weakness should not lead to despair.
For when God grants and redeems us…
Divine redemption changes everything.
The inner essence within us will awaken, transforming us instantly to ascend to exalted levels like in ancient times.
Redemption activates the hidden holiness within the Jewish people.
May the Holy One hasten our redemption, speedily in our days.
A concluding prayer for the final redemption.
The Sefat Emet teaches that exile, struggle, and divine discipline are expressions of love that prepare for sudden spiritual ascent. Just as Israel transformed instantly upon leaving Egypt, so too every Jew experiences daily mini‑exoduses, and the future redemption will awaken our deepest inner holiness.
