Sharing in Communal Suffering
Redemption · Exile · Consolation · Moses · Future Geulah
In the Midrash: “He made His ways known to Moses, His acts to the Children of Israel,” etc.
The Sefat Emet begins by distinguishing between what Moses perceived—God’s inner “ways”—and what Israel saw—God’s external “acts.”
It is taught: One who shares in the suffering of the community merits and sees the community’s consolation.
The principle is that true solidarity grants a person access to the community’s future redemption.
And so it is written concerning mourning for the destruction: “Rejoice with her all who mourn for her,” etc.
Those who genuinely mourn Jerusalem’s destruction are the very ones who will rejoice in her restoration.
We must understand: If the meaning is that he will witness the rebuilding of Jerusalem in his lifetime, why should he merit it more than the rest of his generation?
The Sefat Emet questions the literal reading: why would mourners be privileged above all contemporaries?
And if the meaning is that he will live until the rebuilding, many righteous people passed away earlier.
This rejects the notion that personal merit guarantees living until the future redemption.
Rather, the meaning is that one merits seeing the community’s consolation even within the suffering, for exile is only concealment.
Redemption is already present in hidden form, and those with refined perception can sense it.
But one who merits removing the concealment according to the refinement and purity of his heart can see the community’s consolation.
Inner clarity allows a person to perceive redemption before it manifests outwardly.
As it is written, “Rejoice with her,” for just as the aspect of Knesset Yisrael, though in exile, still contains hidden joy.
The Shekhinah retains a concealed joy, knowing her future elevation.
For she knows she is destined to become a crown on the head of the King.
The Shekhinah’s ultimate honor guarantees her inner, unbroken hope.
So too, one who shares in her sorrow merits seeing her joy.
Empathy with the Shekhinah grants access to the future redemptive light.
This was fulfilled in Moses, of whom it is written: “And he saw their burdens.”
Moses’ compassion was the root of his prophetic access to redemption.
Therefore God showed him the redemption and the giving of the Torah, for this was the purpose of the exile.
Exile serves as the preparatory stage for revelation.
As the Midrash states: the Egyptian exile was a preliminary suffering before the Torah.
The hardships forged the spiritual capacity needed for Sinai.
And all exiles afterward until now are preparations of suffering before the World to Come.
All historical pain serves as spiritual refinement toward ultimate redemption.
Therefore, just as then “the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied,” so it is in all exiles.
Affliction paradoxically generates greater spiritual growth.
And since the reward of the Messianic era and the World to Come is without measure…
The infinite nature of the final reward shapes the nature of its preparation.
Therefore the preparatory sufferings are also without set time or limit.
The path is indefinite because the destination is boundless.
Returning to our point: God showed Moses the hidden light destined to be born from this suffering.
Moses perceived the inner redemptive potential embedded in exile.
Thus: “He made His ways known,” referring to what Israel later saw only once it manifested in action.
Israel experienced results; Moses saw processes.
Hence: “His acts.”
The nation only grasped the external events of redemption.
But to Moses He showed His ways before they came into actuality.
Moses accessed the inner divine intention prior to manifestation.
Thus: “In a flame of fire from within the bush.”
The burning bush revealed concealed light within suffering.
So too the righteous, who constantly share in the suffering of the Shekhinah and of Israel.
Their empathy aligns them with the inner divine process.
They merit to feel illuminations from the future redemption.
They experience glimpses of the final light even now.
The Sefat Emet teaches that those who join the pain of exile can perceive the concealed joy of redemption already present. Moses embodied this by seeing Israel’s suffering, which opened him to God’s hidden redemptive light. Exile serves as preparation for ultimate revelation, and the righteous who empathize with the Shekhinah merit sensing the future redemption even before it manifests.
