Torah as Source of Freedom

In the Midrash: “And Moses was a shepherd… prepared for redemption,” as stated there and in Tanchuma.

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that describes Moses’ role as a shepherd as spiritual preparation for becoming the redeemer.

This is the meaning of “A stronghold in times of trouble.”

The verse alludes to the protective spiritual quality associated with Moses.

“Stronghold” has the same numerical value as “Moses.”

This gematria links Moses directly with divine protection.

He is the prince of Torah, which is called “strength,” and all freedom depends upon Torah, as the Sages said: “You have no free person except one who engages in Torah.”

Moses embodies the Torah, and the Torah itself is the true source of human freedom.

And since one who engages in Torah is a free person, it follows that Moses our teacher, who brought Torah down from heaven, is the master of freedom.

The Sefat Emet emphasizes Moses’ unique role as the channel of ultimate freedom.

And truly, the essence of freedom granted by Torah is that the soul becomes free from the imprisonment of the body.

Freedom is defined spiritually, not politically: liberation of the inner self from physical limitation.

And all of this is accomplished through the power of Torah, as it is taught: “In the beginning”—for the sake of the Torah, which is called “Beginning,” He consulted the Torah and created the world.

The Torah is the blueprint of creation; everything in the world flows from it.

This was the way of Torah: to create the world and to conceal within it the force of His deeds.

Creation hides divine energy, which must later be uncovered through Torah.

And through the power of Torah, the Children of Israel will bring forth into actuality the hidden light embedded in the act of Creation.

The mission of Israel is to reveal the concealed divine light placed within the world.

Therefore it is written, “These are the names”—continuing from the earlier book, Genesis—because just as the world was created through Torah, so the entire exile and redemption from Egypt occurred through the power of Torah.

Shemot is a continuation of Genesis: both creation and redemption follow the same Torah-based pattern.

And this is the completion of Creation.

Redemption finishes what Creation began.

The mouth that bound is the mouth that released.

The same divine force that conceals also reveals, completing the cycle of creation and redemption.

And through the power of Torah all is concealed within nature, and through the power of Torah the imprisonment is opened, saying to the captives: “Go forth.”

Torah both hides and liberates; it transforms nature from a place of concealment into a gateway of redemption.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Torah is the root of creation, concealment, exile, and ultimately redemption. Moses, as bearer of Torah, embodies true freedom, enabling the hidden divine light within the world to emerge.
