Revealing Torah Through Deeds
Torah Light · Mitzvot · Redemption · Moses · Inner Illumination
In the Midrash on “in a flame of fire,” the verse “I am asleep from the commandments, but my heart is awake to perform them,” etc.
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which describes Israel as “asleep” in relation to the commandments, though inwardly awake; this introduces the theme of hidden inner vitality.
“My perfect one—like twins, one feels the suffering of the other,” etc.
This metaphor shows the intimate bond between God and Israel, like twins sharing sensation.
The matter is as it is written: “A commandment is a lamp, and the Torah is light.”
This verse frames the distinction between mitzvot as vessels and Torah as pure illumination.
The Torah is the essence of the light.
Torah itself is the intrinsic spiritual radiance.
But it can be revealed and shine only through the commandments, which are the vessels upon which the light of Torah shines.
Mitzvot serve as the practical forms through which the Torah’s light becomes manifest.
And in this there is sleep and exile, for the souls become closed and cannot bring into actuality the vitality of the soul—this is the essence of exile, as stated: “Bring my soul out of confinement.”
Exile is defined as the soul’s inability to express its inner life outwardly.
And this very pattern existed at the root above, as the Zohar says that “speech was in exile.”
Even the divine articulation of Torah was constricted at its source.
Meaning, the revelation of the Torah’s governance was closed.
The divine order embedded in Torah could not yet openly flow.
For in truth this depends on the preparation of Israel.
The people’s readiness determines the degree of divine revelation.
As it is written: “Open for Me, My sister,” etc.
God calls on Israel to initiate the opening enabling revelation.
And it is stated in the Zohar: “From the heart to the mouth it was not revealed.”
The divine inner truth did not yet reach outward expression.
As it is written: “The day of vengeance is in My heart.” To My heart I revealed, but to My limbs I did not reveal.
This depicts an inner divine knowledge not yet extended into action.
And there are righteous ones who have a share in the heart, the mouth, and the 248 limbs.
Some tzaddikim channel divine truth into thought, speech, and embodied action.
And Moses our teacher is the essence of Torah, as it is said: “He is good”—and “good” refers only to Torah.
Moses embodies the core of Torah itself.
And this is the meaning of “And He appeared to him in a flame of fire,” in which was fulfilled “and My heart is awake.”
The divine revelation to Moses expressed the ever-awake aspect of Torah.
For the essence of Torah has no exile.
Torah’s core is never diminished, only its expression.
Therefore he was designated for redemption.
Moses, aligned with Torah’s essence, was fit to bring deliverance.
And this is what is meant by “Who am I…?” for the Holy One said to Jacob: “And I will surely bring you up.”
Moses questioned his role because God had earlier promised Jacob that “I”—the divine essence—would enact redemption.
Meaning: “I” refers to the Torah, as it is written: “I am the Lord your God.”
The term “I” signifies the Torah as the medium of revelation.
And the Holy One answered him: “And I will be with your mouth,” showing him that he himself is the Torah, and in him is fulfilled “I will bring you up.”
Moses becomes the channel in whom the promise “I will raise you” is realized.
And this is what is meant by: “He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel.”
Moses accessed the inner ways, while Israel perceived the outward deeds.
For to Moses was revealed the inner aspect, the level of “To My heart I revealed.”
Moses perceived the inward divine intention.
And to Israel—when it came to action—the aspect of the 248 commandments that flow from the Torah, as above.
The people experienced Torah primarily through embodied mitzvot.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Torah is pure light, revealed only through the mitzvot. Exile is the blockage preventing inner divine vitality from emerging. Moses, aligned with Torah’s essence, accesses the inner revelation, while Israel receives its expression through action.
