Small alef and the lowered Torah

"Vayikra" — with a small alef.

The Sefas Emes begins from the well-known scribal feature: the alef at the end of "Vayikra" is written small.

For behold, Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom, received the entire Torah in forty days and forty nights in heaven.

Moshe had already received the whole Torah during his forty days atop the mountain.

If so, why were these parshiyos (of Vayikra) said to him in the Ohel Mo'ed (Tent of Meeting) below?

If Moshe already had the entire Torah, what was added by Hashem calling to him anew in the Mishkan on earth?

Rather, it is that Bnei Yisrael were not prepared to receive the Torah as it was spoken to him in heaven.

The repetition was for Bnei Yisrael's sake — the lofty heavenly Torah had to be brought down to a level they could absorb.

For that (heavenly Torah) is the aspect of a large alef.

The Torah as Moshe received it in heaven is the "great alef" — the elevated, full revelation.

And this teaching (in the Ohel Mo'ed) was in a state of smallness relative to the level of Moshe Rabbeinu, alav hashalom, for to him it was a minor matter (milsa zutarta).

Compared to Moshe's heavenly grasp, this earthly teaching was "small" — hence the small alef of "Vayikra"; for Moshe himself it was a trivial step down.

And this is the meaning of "And He spoke... saying (leimor)."

The word "leimor" — "to say [to others]" — signals that this revelation was meant to be transmitted onward to Bnei Yisrael.

That this teaching was "to say" to Bnei Yisrael.

The purpose of the small-alef call was specifically to convey the Torah down to Bnei Yisrael at their level.

And this is what Moshe meant: "It is for your sake that He spoke with me."

Moshe tells Bnei Yisrael that this lowered, accessible communication was entirely on their account, not for his own need.

In that path and way by which Bnei Yisrael are able to receive.

Hashem fashioned a "path" — a reduced, graspable channel — through which the nation could take in the Torah.

And behold, this itself is the matter of the korbanos (offerings).

This very dynamic — bridging the gap between the lofty and the lowly — is the essence of the korbanos, the subject of parshas Vayikra.

As it is written in the Midrash: "Fortunate is the one You choose and bring near" (Tehillim 65:5).

The pasuk links bechirah (choosing) and karov (drawing near) — the themes of being chosen and being brought close through the korbanos.

"Choosing" is the aspect of Moshe, His chosen one.

The dimension of bechirah is embodied by Moshe, "His chosen," who received the Torah on its highest level.

And so too Bnei Yisrael were prepared at Matan Torah, having been chosen to be "the portion of Hashem, His people" (Devarim 32:9).

At Sinai, Bnei Yisrael too stood on the level of bechirah, chosen as Hashem's own portion.

And they themselves are literally the Torah.

At that exalted state, Bnei Yisrael were not merely recipients of Torah but were utterly identified with it.

As it is taught: "The Torah, HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and Yisrael are all one."

At the root, Torah, Hashem, and Yisrael form a single unity — the original lofty state.

But when we fell from this level, we need to be drawn near through the korbanos.

After the descent from that exalted unity, the korbanos became the means of karvanus — being brought close to Hashem once again.

And this is "a word that stands in deed" (i.e., realized through concrete action).

Whereas the heavenly Torah was pure word and revelation, the korbanos express that closeness through actual physical deed — Torah made tangible for those who have descended from the higher rung.

Summary: The small alef of "Vayikra" reflects that the teaching given to Moshe in the Mishkan was a "small," lowered version of the great Torah he had already received in heaven — reduced so that Bnei Yisrael could absorb it. This is the very essence of the korbanos: originally, at Sinai, Torah, Hashem, and Yisrael were one, and Bnei Yisrael were themselves the Torah. But once they fell from that unity, the korbanos became the path of being drawn near again — closeness realized through tangible deed rather than pure heavenly revelation.
