Lech Lecha תרל”ד 4

במד’ במאמר הקב”ה לאברהם הי’ תמים. תמה שע”י המילה יהי’ יותר תמים ע”ש.
The Midrash (Tanchuma Lech Lecha 16) explains that when HaShem told Avraham to be “Perfect”, Avraham wondered how it could be that by being circumcised and apparently lacking that would actually be better.
והאמת כמ”ש חז”ל כל יתר כנטול דמי כי כפי מה שאדם שומר כחו שלא לעשות בו מה שאינו צריך נקרא תמים שהכח נשמר אצלו וח”ו כשמשתמש בו לדברים אחרים מחסר כחו ממקום הראוי ואיננו שלם:
However the truth is that this is the idea our sages explain (Chulim 58b) Extra is (actually) less. Which means that in as much as one is able to guard his energy and not do unnecessary things, that can actually lead to perfection. Yet when one misuses his power for other things, it is actually lacking where it is really needed and one is not complete.
