Vayehsev תרל”ה 1
ביקש לישב בשלוה כו’. לא דיין שמתוקן להם עוה”ב כו’ בעוה”ז. לכן קפץ עליו רוגזו של יוסף.
Yaakov wished to settle in peace, and HaShem said is it not enough that they (the tzadikim) have peace in the world to come but they wish to have it also in this world. Therefore the issue with Yosed occurred.
מקודם עבר על יעקב אע”ה מה שעבר להינצל מעשו ולבן. כמ”ש הצילני נא כו’. ואח”כ כשניצל מהם והפריש עצמו מסט”א.
Previously all the occurrences that happened to Yaakov were to save him from Eisav and Lavan, As Yaakov said “Save me from my brother from Eisav” and once he was saved from them he became completely removed from the negative influences.
עתה בא לתקן את כל אשר עבר עליו.
And now his mission was to repair everything that he had gone through and perfect it all.
ודבר זה נוהג בכל אדם כי מקודם צריכין ללחום עם היצה”ר ולפרוש עצמו ממנו. ולגבור נגד כל המחשבות והרצונות אשר לא לה’ המה. ואז נעשה בן חורין והוא בן עוה”ב.
This chain of events is applicable to every person. The first step is always to fight the evil inclination and separate oneself from it, and overcome all the thoughts and desires that are not Godly. And once one does that he becomes a free man, and worthy of the world to come.
כי מי שהוא בן חורין מיצה”ר ואינו משועבד לסט”א. הוא בן עוה”ב.
For someone who is free from the Yetzer Hara and no longer subjected to the evil forces is one who is worthy of the world to come.
והוא בחי’ שבת. מנוחה בלי מלחמה ועבודה.
This is the idea of Shabbos where there is rest without any fighting and work.
אבל הצדיק לא די לו זה. אבל צריך לחזור ולתקן את כל אשר עבר עליו מעודו עד היום הזה שנעשה צדיק.
However the tzadik is not satisfied with the rest that he will receive in the world to come, he also wants to settle in peace in this world. This is done by going through every event that he ever experienced until he became a tzadik, and correcting it.
והוא ענין לישב בשלוה בעוה”ז ג”כ.
And this is the idea that he wished to settle in peace in this world (he wanted to bring the element of the peace of Olam haba into this world)
[והוא בחי’ אור חוזר ובחי’ תשובה. וכענין הזה פרשנו מ”ש וישובו לפני פי החירות כו’. כי אחר יציאת מצרים היה ענין קי”ס. והוא לתקן כל מה שעבר עליהם במצרים כנ”ל].
[This is the idea of the returning light and the idea of Teshuva. That one corrects all of one’s past. We have explained this also regarding when Bnei Yisrael left Mitzrayim they returned and encamped in front of Pi Hachiros, for even after leaving Mitzrayim (refusing the evil inclination and beating it) there was the crossing of the sea (where they essentially had complete revenge of the egyptians – the evil forces- and destroyed them.]
ומ”ש קפץ עליו. רוגזו של יוסף לא הי’ עונש על זה רק שא”א לתקן הכל בלי נסיונות רבות כאלו.
And the idea that Yaakov was seemingly punished with the story of Yosef, is not a punishment at all, rather it is because to attain such a high level of bringing the completion of the world to come into this world requires many great tests.
ורצה יעקב אבינו לתקן כל ימות החול להיות כמו לעתיד יום שכולו שבת. ולא עלה בידו כי לא הגיע הזמן עדיין.
Yaakov wanted to really repair all the days of the week (all of this world to perfection) like it will be in the future when there will only be Shabbos. However he wasn’t able to because it was not the right time.
אבל פעל בזה שיוכלו בנ”י למצוא בחי’ מנוחת שבת גם בימות החול בזמנים מיוחדים כענין חנוכה ופורים.
However there was an everlasting effect, and that is that Bnei Yisrael are able to find the rest of shabbos even during the days of the week on special occasions, for example Chanukah and Purim.
ובמדרש והי’ בית יעקב אש כו’ כי הכל תלוי ביעקב ויוסף אם הם מתחזקים במקומם להיות אש ולהבה. אז בית עשו לקש.
In the Medrash it says the House of Yaakov will be a Fire and the House of Yosef a flame and the House of Eisav straw. For everything is dependent on Yaakov and Yosef, when they are fortified in their place to bring a fire and a flame, this causes Eisav to turn to straw.
כי צריכין בני ישראל להוציא בלעם מפיהם ע”י שעושין מעשה עוה”ז בקדושה מוציאין כל הניצוצות קדושות שיש בעולם ונשאר בית עשו לקש.
FOr Bnei Yisrael need to “remove what they have swallowed from their mouth” through doing the actions of this world in a state of holiness, they are able to remove all the sparks of holiness that exist in the lowliness of this world and therefore once all the holy sparks are no longer there all that is left is the house of Eisav of straw. (For the straw is what holds and protects the wheat, but once the wheat is removed there is only highly flammable straw).
והכלל בכל מקום יש בית יעקב ויוסף ובית עשו לקש כנ”ל.
The general principle is that whenever there is the house of Yaakov and the house of Yosef, then the house of Eisav is powerless like straw. (As we know Yaakov could only confront EIsav after Yosef was born).
וז”ש כינוסו וכינוס בניו כו’ זה גרם ואת כולם ישא רוח כו’:
This is what is meant by the ingathering of Yaakov and his children to save him from Eisav and this causes that “They (Eisav) should all be borne off by the wind”.
