Jacob, Justice, and Mercy Vayishlach

“In the verse: ‘I am diminished by all the kindnesses… truth… save me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that Jacob’s plea reflects both kindness and truth, and his request for rescue from Esau carries multiple layers of meaning.

“For Esau inherited the sword and the attribute of judgment; and if he had submitted himself to Jacob, even the attribute of judgment would have been repaired, for it is known that judgment must be nullified before kindness and compassion.”

Esau embodies strict judgment. Had he surrendered this trait to Jacob, it could have been sweetened and brought into harmony with divine compassion.

“And since he did not wish to submit and instead strengthened himself in the attribute of judgment…”

Esau’s refusal to yield entrenched him further in harsh judgment.

“He came into the attribute of falsehood.”

Unchecked judgment devolves into distortion and falsehood.

“This is the meaning of the name Esau, as our sages said: ‘The vanity [sheker] that I created in My world.’”

The very name Esau embodies this slide from judgment into falsehood.

“And all the fear and anguish that Jacob experienced was in order to sustain the world through kindness and mercy.”

Jacob’s fear served a cosmic purpose—to keep divine compassion flowing into the world.

“‘From the hand of my brother’—this refers to the attribute of judgment.”

Esau as ‘brother’ symbolizes strict justice.

“‘From the hand of Esau’—this refers to the attribute of falsehood.”

Esau as ‘Esau’ represents falseness born from untempered judgment.

“The opposite of kindness and truth.”

Falsehood and harsh judgment stand in direct contrast to God’s kindness and truth.

“And it is written: ‘To the house of Jacob who redeemed Abraham,’ for Abraham and Isaac were pillars that required repair.”

Jacob’s mission included completing and correcting the spiritual foundations set by Abraham and Isaac.

“And Jacob repaired the attribute of Abraham.”

Jacob perfected Abraham’s trait of kindness by grounding it in truth.

“And in the future, through the King Messiah, the attribute of Isaac will also be repaired.”

Messiah will harmonize Isaac’s attribute of severity with compassion.

“Therefore, regarding the future it is written: ‘You are our father,’ referring to Isaac.”

Isaac’s role will be elevated and recognized fully in the messianic era.

“And all these—Esau’s offspring and the kings who ruled before a king ruled over Israel—are supernal princes who strengthen themselves in the attribute of judgment.”

These early powers reflect heavenly forces of judgment that dominated before Israel’s spiritual rule was established.

“As it is said: ‘To Him who struck great kings… and slew mighty kings’—for this is great kindness, that the Holy One struck those mighty forces above that blocked kindness from descending below.”

God’s ‘striking’ symbolizes removing spiritual obstructions that prevent divine kindness from reaching the world.

“And the Kenite, Kenizzite, and Kadmonite—Esau inherited them, but the King Messiah will overpower them.”

Certain spiritual domains currently under Esau’s judgmental forces will ultimately be reclaimed by the Messiah.

“Therefore, afterward is written the order of the tribes and the birth of the King Messiah.”

The Torah’s sequencing hints at the ultimate emergence of messianic harmony after the rectification of judgment.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Esau embodies harsh judgment that, untempered, collapses into falsehood. Jacob’s fear and struggle served to sustain the world through kindness and mercy. His task was to repair Abraham’s trait, while Messiah will rectify Isaac’s. Esau’s descendants and early kings symbolize heavenly forces of judgment that God must subdue so kindness can flow. Ultimately, Messiah will reclaim spiritual realms held by Esau, leading to the full emergence of Israel’s tribes and the messianic age.
