Vayeshev
One must contemplate what God arranged after he (Yosef) withstood this tremendous test.
The Sefat Emet opens by asking why, after Yosef’s great triumph over temptation, God orchestrated further difficulties.
The Sages taught that this trial was greater than the trials of the Patriarchs.
This emphasizes the extraordinary spiritual level of Yosef’s challenge.
And afterward his master placed him in the prison house.
Despite his righteousness, Yosef is cast into prison—raising the question of why such suffering follows such merit.
It is said regarding this that when God must punish a righteous person, the punishment comes at a time when his merit is very great.
The Sefat Emet proposes a principle: divine justice for the righteous is administered specifically when they are spiritually elevated.
As we find that God judges the Israelites by day, when they are performing mitzvot, as taught in the Midrash on “He will judge nations with fairness.”
This Midrash supports the idea that divine judgment aligns with moments of heightened merit, not diminished merit.
Furthermore, it appears that the imprisonment was truly a punishment for the slander, as the Sages taught.
Yosef’s earlier misdeed—bringing negative reports about his brothers—remained unresolved.
However, after he came to this trial and had to greatly strengthen himself until he reached the foundation of his good deeds…
Passing the trial clarified and fortified the very root of Yosef’s righteousness.
…and he established himself at the good level uniquely his.
Yosef stabilized himself in his true spiritual identity and destined level.
Then his first sin was aroused even more, as the saying: God is exacting with the righteous to a hair’s breadth.
Once elevated, even Yosef’s small earlier shortcomings demanded rectification.
Therefore at that time he was punished for the earlier sin.
The imprisonment corresponds to this heightened divine precision.
And so it is with every person: according to how he refines himself, he must afterward repair his earlier deeds.
Spiritual growth brings earlier flaws to the surface so they may be corrected.
From this a person should all the more learn never to fall into arrogance when performing a mitzvah properly, but rather feel greater awe as he aligns himself—so that earlier actions not awaken punishment upon him.
The Sefat Emet concludes with a moral exhortation: spiritual achievement should instill humility and vigilance, not pride.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Yosef’s imprisonment followed his great spiritual victory because divine justice for the righteous operates precisely at moments of high merit. Passing the trial awakened the need to rectify his earlier misdeeds, illustrating a universal principle: the more a person ascends, the more he must refine past actions, with humility and awe.
