Shabbat After Weekday Toil Vayishlach

In the Midrash on the verse “And Jacob came whole… and he encamped…,” it says that he entered on the eve of Shabbat at twilight.

The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash, which teaches that Jacob arrived precisely at the transition point into Shabbat, a moment of deep spiritual meaning.

They interpreted the word “and he encamped.”

The Midrash draws meaning from the term “ויחן,” understanding it as implying preparation for Shabbat and spiritual settling.

And “peace” is also a name for Shabbat, as is known.

Shabbat is identified with peace, reinforcing the connection between Jacob’s “wholeness” and Shabbat.

The explanation is that Jacob’s entire descent to the Diaspora represented the weekdays, the days of labor.

Jacob’s time outside the Land symbolizes spiritual struggle and the six days of mundane work.

And through the great labor he had there,

His intense spiritual effort in exile purified and elevated him.

he afterward merited the aspect of Shabbat in completeness.

After the exertion of the weekday-like exile, Jacob reached a full experience of Shabbat’s holiness.

And this is what is meant by “In six troubles He will save you, and in seven no evil shall touch you.”

The six troubles correspond to the six days of labor; the seventh, Shabbat, is untouched by harm.

For according to the abundance of troubles during the six days of work,

The more one struggles in the weekdays, the more refined one becomes for Shabbat.

so too he is pure and clean, without any touch of evil on Shabbat.

Shabbat brings a state of spiritual protection and clarity.

And this is why entering at twilight is a great matter.

The transition moment carries special sanctity and precision.

As our sages said regarding the Creator: “And He finished on the seventh day.”

The sages explain that God completed creation exactly at the boundary of Shabbat.

He knows His moments and enters it by a hair’s breadth.

Creation ended with infinitesimal precision at the moment Shabbat began.

So too, as it were, our father Jacob completed all the work designated for the weekdays to the very end.

Jacob fulfilled the weekday mission entirely, just as God completed creation.

Therefore he entered by a hair’s breadth, as the Midrash infers from the verse “And Jacob came whole.”

The precise timing reflects his complete spiritual fulfillment.

And “whole” refers to Shabbat.

Wholeness is synonymous with the completion and peace of Shabbat.

It appears that he arrived literally on Shabbat.

The Sefat Emet suggests the arrival coincided exactly with Shabbat’s onset.

As it is written, “And He finished on the seventh day,” as explained above.

The parallel between Jacob’s arrival and the divine completion of creation emphasizes Shabbat’s perfection.

Summary: Jacob’s journey mirrors the movement from weekday struggle to Shabbat completeness. His precise arrival at Shabbat reflects a total fulfillment of weekday labor and the attainment of wholeness, echoing the divine pattern of creation’s completion.
