Shabbat Inner Protection Vayishlach

“And in the Midrash: ‘In six troubles He will save you,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that speaks of divine rescue in six forms of suffering.

“This refers to the aspect of the body, which requires deliverance; and in this regard, ‘he touched the hollow of his thigh,’ which the Sages said refers to the future generations that would emerge from him.”

The ‘six troubles’ correspond to the vulnerable physical dimension. The blow to Jacob’s thigh signifies harm affecting future bodily generations.

“And this is fulfilled now in these lowly generations, for we have neither prophecy nor holy spirit.”

The Sefat Emet explains that our weakened spiritual state is that same wound manifest in history.

“For those levels are expansions of ‘the voice is the voice of Jacob,’ and they are lacking for us now.”

Prophecy and inspiration are expressions of Jacob’s ‘voice,’ which has faded in our era.

“Therefore the hands of Esau dominate.”

When Jacob’s voice is diminished, the force symbolized by Esau gains power.

“And these are the aspect of the six weekdays.”

The dominance of Esau corresponds to the mundane, material mode of the six working days.

“But ‘in the seventh He will not touch you’—this is the aspect of Shabbat and the inner dimension, which is called the name Israel.”

The seventh day represents protected inner holiness, the essence of ‘Israel,’ beyond the reach of foreign influence.

“And I have written elsewhere that there is an aspect of ‘the son is the leg of the father,’ arising from the building of bodies.”

This describes one mode of transmission from parent to child—physical continuity.

“And this is in the hollow of his thigh, for a blemish and interruption occurred in the level of true prophets.”

The wound at the thigh represents a break in physical-lineage prophecy.

“And there is an aspect of the son’s mind from the father’s mind, which is the connection of souls from father to son.”

A second mode of transmission is spiritual: the inner bond of souls across generations.

“And this is the aspect of Joseph, the offspring of Jacob.”

Joseph embodies the spiritual continuation of Jacob’s essence.

“And this aspect is revealed on Shabbat, where there is no foreign contact at all, as it is said: ‘In the seventh He will not touch.’”

On Shabbat the spiritual bond is fully revealed and protected.

“Therefore they interpreted: ‘And Jacob came whole… and he encamped,’ meaning he established boundaries.”

Jacob’s completeness is expressed in the establishment of Shabbat boundaries.

“And this is the spreading of a shelter of peace over us, and the Other Side flees.”

Shabbat creates a canopy of peace that repels harmful forces.

The Sefat Emet links Jacob’s wound, the decline of prophecy, and the struggle of Jacob and Esau to the distinction between weekday physicality and Shabbat spirituality. He emphasizes two channels of transmission—physical and spiritual—highlighting Joseph as the carrier of Jacob’s spiritual essence, which shines most fully on Shabbat.
