Spiritual Yearning Beyond the Body Vayishlach

Another explanation of “I am diminished by all the kindnesses and all the truth.”

The Sefat Emet introduces a new interpretation of Jacob’s words, framing “I am diminished” as a description of the human condition.

This refers to the intellect and awareness within a person, which are far greater than the garment that is the human body.

The inner spiritual capacities of a person surpass the body that contains them.

The explanation is according to what the Sages said: “Run like a deer.”

This instruction is used to illustrate the relationship of soul and body.

This is explained by the verse “The deer is for all the lands,” meaning, just as the deer’s skin cannot contain its flesh…

The deer’s skin is taut because the animal’s inner vitality exceeds its physical container.

So it is with a person, into whom God breathed a living soul, yet the soul and body constrain the spirit so it cannot fully expand.

The divine spirit within a person is limited by the body that contains it.

For otherwise it would ascend to its source due to overwhelming desire to return to the Cause of all causes.

The soul naturally yearns to return to its divine root, and only the body restrains this ascent.

Yet it is true that through the body’s confinement, which prevents the spirit from expanding, the desire grows stronger.

The very limitation imposed by the body intensifies the soul’s longing.

Eventually this desire gains the power to draw the garment—the body—along with it, until in the end the righteous soul returns to its root when its deeds are completed.

The soul’s yearning slowly elevates the body as well, culminating in the tzaddik’s ascent at life’s end.

This is the meaning of “run like a deer,” for since its skin cannot contain it, it runs with greater power and distance.

The deer’s excess vitality mirrors the soul’s overflowing energy within the body.

Therefore the foundation of human service is longing, as the Sages said: “Service of the heart is prayer.”

True worship stems from the heart’s yearning for God.

Meaning: the constant yearning and fiery desire of the heart to cling to God is the essence of service.

Continuous inner longing defines authentic avodah.

For there is never rest for the righteous; when they refine the body even slightly, the intellect increases greatly.

Each step of bodily refinement expands spiritual understanding.

Therefore there is always the desire to draw the garment—the body—closer to the inner essence.

The soul seeks to elevate the body to align with its inner truth.

And this is the meaning of “I am diminished,” for the body—the garment—is too small to contain the intellect, the kindnesses, and the truth that God has bestowed upon His servant.

Jacob acknowledges the mismatch between divine gifts and human limitation.

Therefore, “Rescue me, please.”

Jacob prays for protection given this imbalance.

For surely, when the body will be fully refined as it will be in the future, there will be no fear of the Other Side at all.

A perfected body will no longer obstruct the divine.

But since in this world the body requires constant refinement, therefore he prayed: “Rescue me, please.” Understand this.

The ongoing struggle of embodiment necessitates continual divine assistance.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the soul’s vast inner light exceeds the body’s capacity, creating tension that fuels spiritual longing. This yearning draws the body upward until it, too, becomes refined. Jacob’s words express this dynamic and his prayer for protection amidst the limitations of the physical world.
