Vayeshev תרס”ב – תרס”ג 3

בפסוק נסעו מזה דאיתא משה נתנבא בזה הדבר אספקלריא דנהרא.

“In the verse ‘they traveled from there,’ it is taught that Moses prophesied with ‘this word,’ through a clear speculum.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that Moses’ prophecy operated through ‘this word’—a perfectly clear prophetic medium.

ונביאים מתנבאים בכה.

“But the (other) prophets prophesy with ‘thus’.”

Other prophets receive revelation only indirectly, through the level called ‘thus,’ which is dimmer and less direct.

פי’ כה כפי הכנת הנביא ושיעורין דליבא בכח המדמה כמ”ש וביד הנביאים אדמה.

“‘Thus’ means according to the preparation of the prophet and the measures of the heart within the imaginative faculty, as it says: ‘And through the prophets I give likenesses.’”

The prophetic level of ‘thus’ depends on the prophet’s inner readiness and imaginative capacity, which shapes the form of the message.

ונביאות מרע”ה זה הדבר למעלה ממדריגות הנביאים.

“But the prophecy of our teacher Moses—‘this word’—is above the levels of the (other) prophets.”

Moses’ prophecy transcends the typical prophetic process and requires no imaginative mediation.

והוא בחי’ השבת ובחי’ יוסף.

“And this is the aspect of Shabbat and the aspect of Joseph.”

The clarity of Moses’ prophecy parallels the spiritual clarity of Shabbat and the purity associated with Joseph.

והשבטים היו עמודים לתקן עוה”ז בבחי’ כה אספקלריא שאינה מאירה.

“And the tribes were pillars to rectify this world through the aspect of ‘thus,’ the non‑illuminating speculum.”

The tribes operate within the concealed, this‑worldly mode of service, where God’s light is not fully revealed.

והי’ הכנה לדורות השפלים כדאיתא במד’ עבירתן של שבטים תקוה הוא לעולם וישבו לאכל לחם להאכיל לחם כו’.

“And this served as preparation for the lower generations, as the Midrash says: the sin of the tribes is hope for the world; ‘they sat to eat bread’—to provide bread, etc.”

Their shortcomings model a path of hope for later generations, teaching that spiritual repair can emerge even through imperfection.

כי להם נחשב לחטא מה שלא היו נמשכין אחר מדת זה.

“For it was considered a sin for them that they did not draw after this measure.”

The tribes were held to a higher standard; not striving toward the clarity of ‘this word’ was counted against them.

והוא תקוה טובה לבאי עולם שא”י להמשך אחר מדת זה הדבר רק בחי’ כה.

“Yet it is good hope for those who come into the world, for they cannot follow the measure of ‘this word,’ only the aspect of ‘thus.’”

Later generations are not expected to reach the level of Moses; their spiritual path is through the more accessible mode of ‘thus.’

והיא בחי’ חנוכה חנו כה.

“And this is the aspect of Hanukkah—‘they encamped at ‘thus.’”

Hanukkah embodies a sanctity that arises within the ‘thus’ level, illuminating the concealed world from within.

The Sefat Emet contrasts Moses’ clear prophecy (‘this word’) with the tribes’ and prophets’ mediated prophecy (‘thus’). The tribes’ struggles prepare future generations to serve God through the concealed dimension, which finds expression in Hanukkah.
