בפסוק מרגלים אתם לראות את ערות הארץ כו’.
“In the verse, ‘You are spies, to see the nakedness of the land,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that Joseph’s accusation contains a deeper teaching beyond its surface meaning.
הענין הוא כי יוסף גילה להם כי כל תהלוכות זה שבאו למצרים הי’ להכין את המקום בעבור הגלות שיהי’ אח”כ.
“The matter is that Joseph revealed to them that all these events— their coming to Egypt— were meant to prepare the place for the exile that would follow.”
Joseph’s actions were not personal but part of divine preparation: Egypt had to be spiritually set for Israel’s future exile.
ומטעם זה עצמו רצה שיביאו גם את בנימין כמ”ש המפרשים שיהי’ יחוד כל הי”ב שבטים.
“For this very reason he wanted them to bring Benjamin, as the commentators write, so there would be a unification of all twelve tribes.”
The mission would be incomplete without Benjamin, because only the wholeness of all twelve tribes enables their collective spiritual function.
והגם כי היו ביחד אצל יעקב אע”ה.
“And although they had been together previously with Jacob, peace be upon him…”
Even their unity in Jacob’s presence was not sufficient for what Joseph sought to accomplish.
אבל האבות הוא מדריגה עליונה למעלה מהטבע.
“Nevertheless, the Patriarchs are a higher level, beyond nature.”
Jacob’s realm is supernatural; events occurring under his influence do not yet shape the natural plane where the tribes must function.
רק י”ב שבטי עליון הם מיוחדים להנהגה תחתונה שבנ”י מתנהגים בה.
“Only the twelve supernal tribes are designated for the lower mode of governance through which the Children of Israel are conducted.”
The tribes serve as channels through which divine guidance enters the natural world, so their unity must manifest within that realm.
והמפרשים כתבו רמז טבח והכן חנוכה ע”ש.
“And the commentators wrote that there is an allusion in ‘slaughter and prepare’ to Chanukah.”
Classical interpreters see a hint to Chanukah in Joseph’s words, suggesting that their preparation parallels later redemptive preparations.
כי גם בחנוכה עיקר ההנהגה בבחי’ יב”ש לכן קוראין חנוכת המזבח בחנוכה זאת חנוכת המזבח.
“For also on Chanukah the primary mode of divine governance is through the aspect of the twelve tribes; therefore we read ‘This is the dedication of the altar’ on Chanukah.”
Chanukah’s spiritual structure depends on the same twelvefold unity, which is why the Torah reading of the altar’s dedication is central then.

“And we have already written about this above at length.”
The Sefat Emet notes that this principle— the connection between the tribes’ unity and redemptive light— was explained earlier in more detail.
Summary: Joseph’s actions were part of a divine plan to prepare Egypt for Israel’s future exile.
