בפסוק בלבת אש מתוך הסנה.

“In the verse ‘in a flame of fire from within the bush.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the revelation begins specifically through fire emerging from the bush.

איתא במד’ שהראה לו שהגם שהמצריים שולטין עליהם לא יכלו ח”ו ע”ש.

“It is stated in the Midrash that He showed him that although the Egyptians rule over them, they will not, God forbid, be able to destroy them.”

The burning bush becomes a sign of Israel’s indestructibility under Egyptian oppression.

ובאמת לשון הפסוק מראה הגדול הזה משמע שזה המראה הי’ עיקר האות למרע”ה.

“And truly, the wording ‘this great sight’ implies that this vision was the primary sign to Moses.”

The Torah emphasizes that the miracle of the fire itself is the foundational sign given to Moses.

ושע”ז נאמר אח”כ וזה לך האות.

“And concerning this it later says: ‘And this shall be the sign for you.’”

This sign is not supplementary but central to Moses’ mission.

דכ’ כה דברי כאש נאום ה’.

“For it is written: ‘My words are like fire, says the Lord.’”

The fire symbolizes the divine word itself.

וכן נאמר דבריו שמעת מתוך האש.

“And so it is said: ‘You heard His words from within the fire.’”

Fire becomes the medium of revelation at Sinai as well.

ומרע”ה אמר לבנ”י הנשמע כדבר הזה השמע עם כו’ מדבר מתוך האש כאשר שמעת אתה ויחי.

“And Moses said to Israel: ‘Has anything like this ever been heard… God speaking from within the fire, as you heard, and yet lived?’”

Israel’s survival of divine fire is itself a miracle.

וזה הראה הקב”ה למרע”ה שיוכלו בנ”י לקבל אש הגדול הזה וישתארו חיים בגוף.

“And this God showed Moses—that Israel can receive this great fire and yet remain alive in body.”

The burning bush foreshadows Israel’s capacity to withstand divine intensity.

כדאיתא במד’ אש שלמעלה שורפת ואינה אוכלת.

“As the Midrash teaches: the fire above burns yet does not consume.”

Heavenly fire transforms rather than destroys.

וכמו כן אש התורה מהפך הגוף להבעירו בהתלהבות האש.

“So too the fire of Torah transforms the body, igniting it with fiery passion.”

Torah burns within a person, elevating physical life.

ואעפ”כ נשאר חי בגוף.

“And nevertheless he remains alive in body.”

The human vessel can contain divine fire.

וע”ז כ’ תורת ה’ תמימה משיבת נפש.

“And regarding this it is written: ‘The Torah of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul.’”

Torah revives rather than consumes.

ואחז”ל גדולה תורה שנותנת חיים לעושי’ בעוה”ז ובעוה”ב.

“And our sages said: Great is Torah, for it gives life to those who practice it in this world and the next.”

Torah’s fire sustains life eternally.

וכ’ הכא הסנה בוער באש וכ’ התם ההר בוער באש.

“It is written here: ‘the bush burned with fire,’ and there: ‘the mountain burned with fire.’”

The fire of the bush and the fire of Sinai are one.

וזה הרמז וזה לך האות בהוציאך את העם כו’ תעבדון א”ה על ההר הזה.

“And this is the hint: ‘This shall be the sign for you… you will serve God on this mountain.’”

The fire of Sinai is already announced in the fire of the bush.

באש הגדול הזה.

“In this great fire.”

Both fires are manifestations of the same divine intensity.

אכן הראו לו שבאמת יזכו לזה ע”י גלות מצרים שגם זה נרמז הסנה בוער באש ואיננו אוכל.

“Indeed they showed him that Israel will merit this through the exile in Egypt, also hinted by the bush burning with fire yet not consumed.”

The suffering of Egypt refines Israel to receive divine fire.

שע”י שירדו לכור הברזל במצרים ואעפ”כ העלו משם ני”ק.

“For by descending into the iron furnace of Egypt, yet still elevating sparks from there…”

Israel extracts holiness even from oppression.

עי”ז עצמו יזכו לקבל האש שלמעלה ג”כ.

“Through this itself they will merit to receive the heavenly fire as well.”

Redemption prepares them for revelation.

וכ”ז הרמז בכל איש ישראל.

“And all this is also a hint concerning every Jew.”

The dynamic applies to each person’s inner life.

הנשמה אש מן השמים והגוף מתנגד אל כח הנשמה.

“The soul is fire from heaven, and the body resists the power of the soul.”

Inner spiritual struggle mirrors the national story.

וכפי נצחון המלחמה שאין הגוף משנה כח הנשמה.

“And according to the soul’s victory, when the body does not alter the soul’s power…”

Spiritual dominance enables harmony.

כך זוכה גם הגוף לקבל הארה מן הנשמה.

“So too the body merits to receive illumination from the soul.”

The body becomes a vessel for divine light.

וכן איתא במד’ שיסורי מצרים הי’ הכנה לקבלת התורה.

“And so the Midrash teaches: the suffering in Egypt was preparation for receiving the Torah.”

Purification precedes revelation, nationally and individually.

Summary: The burning bush reveals Israel’s ability to receive divine fire without being consumed, a capacity forged in Egyptian exile and mirrored within each person whose soul seeks to illuminate the body.
