Vayigash

“In the verse: ‘I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on God’s double promise to descend with Israel into exile and to raise them up again.

“‘Anochi’ is the Torah—‘I am the Lord your God’—and God showed him that all the movements of exile and redemption are entirely Torah.”

The word Anochi hints to Torah itself, teaching that the entire story of exile and redemption is part of the divine teaching.

“For it is taught that the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is both concealed and revealed.”

God’s presence has dual modes: one hidden, one manifest, and Torah mirrors this structure.

“And so it is with the Torah.”

The Torah also contains aspects that are open and aspects that remain concealed.

“And so it is with the Children of Israel.”

The people of Israel likewise have dimensions of revelation and concealment within their spiritual life.

“And this is the meaning of: ‘A locked garden, a sealed fountain.’”

This verse illustrates the theme of hiddenness within holiness.

“There are words of Torah that cannot be brought from potential to actuality except through concealment and exile.”

Some spiritual truths only emerge through the experience of being hidden or displaced.

“And this is the meaning of ‘I will surely hide My face’: that the Torah will be revealed specifically through the aspect of concealment.”

Even divine hiding becomes a catalyst for deeper revelation.

“It is taught that there are impressions and concealments within all worlds.”

Every spiritual level contains both what is visible and what is hidden.

“For in every world there is an imprint in revelation and in concealment.”

Each realm carries a trace of both modes.

“And likewise every person feels within his soul that sometimes the light of holiness is revealed to him—each according to his level—and sometimes it is concealed.”

The alternating experience of clarity and obscurity is part of every individual’s spiritual life.

“And all this is not accidental; rather, this is the way of the Torah.”

The fluctuation between revelation and concealment is essential to how divine wisdom unfolds in the world.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that exile and redemption, concealment and revelation, are all expressions of Torah. God, Torah, and Israel each contain hidden and revealed dimensions, and spiritual growth often emerges specifically from concealment.
