Chanukah’s Eight-Day Meaning For תרל”ו 5

It is stated in the book Kedushat Levi regarding the question of the Beit Yosef, that on the first night there was no miracle, and he answers that the miracle of the military victory is the miracle of the first night.

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Kedushat Levi, who explains that even though the oil miracle had not yet occurred on the first night, the miracle of defeating the Greek forces itself constitutes the miracle celebrated on that night.

And truly it seems that the essence of the festival is the victory over the wicked Greek empire, as stated in Al Ha‑Nissim.

The primary reason for the holiday, according to the Sefat Emet, is the salvation and victory over Greek oppression, which is explicitly emphasized in Al Ha‑Nissim.

And it appears that since the Holy One performed for us the miracle of the lights, therefore the festival was established for all generations.

Although military victory is the essence, the miracle of the oil served as a divine sign that the holiday should be fixed permanently in the Jewish calendar.

This is explained according to what was stated earlier, that these are festivals of the people of Israel.

The Sefat Emet reiterates his principle that Chanukah is a “festival of Israel,” meaning initiated from below by the actions of the Jewish people.

And the festivals of God require the Jewish people to receive them with willingness and joy.

Festivals ordained directly by God depend on Israel’s acceptance and inner readiness.

And the festivals of the people of Israel rely on God to receive them with willingness and joy.

In contrast, festivals initiated by Israel require divine approval, a heavenly affirmation that the celebration is pleasing above.

And He showed our ancestors that He accepted the festival from them, and therefore they established it for generations.

The miracle of the oil served as proof that God accepted the holiday the Maccabees initiated, thus making it binding forever.

And it is also true, as we said, that these are festivals of Israel, meaning that they awakened the essential point.

Israel’s spiritual awakening—its self‑sacrifice and rededication—formed the core from which the festival emerges.

But the arrangement was given to them from Heaven, that the festival should extend for eight days.

Although Israel initiated the holiday, the structure—eight days—was divinely ordained.

And this is the meaning of “sons of insight established eight days,” that they understood that through this miracle God hinted to them that the radiance of this festival should continue for eight days.

The “sons of insight” discerned that the miracle signaled an eight‑day spiritual illumination, shaping the holiday’s duration.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Chanukah originates in Israel’s actions—especially the victory over Greece—but the miracle of the oil revealed divine approval and determined the holiday’s eight‑day structure.
