Inner Truth Over Foreign Wisdom For תרל”ה 4

The Maharal wrote that Greece sought to sway the Jewish people through “wisdom,” drawing them toward external, superficial wisdom.

The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the Greek decree targeted the Jewish attachment to inner, divine wisdom, attempting to replace it with purely intellectual, external philosophy.

And it seems that “Yavan” (Greece) is related to the word for deception, for they sought to mislead the Jewish people.

Here he offers a linguistic teaching: Greece represents the force of subtle spiritual deception, disguising falsehood as truth.

For there are many areas where even those with knowledge can confuse truth and falsehood, and it depends on very fine distinctions.

The danger lies in nuance: without a deep spiritual compass, even the wise can mistake the false for the true.

But every Jew possesses a point of cleaving to God, and this is the inner knowledge given to Israel, through which one can recognize truth.

This “point of deveikut” is the innate Jewish faculty of divine knowing, which guides one toward authentic truth beyond intellectual analysis.

Therefore the Chanuka miracle was done through oil, for oil has the quality of being drawn after the wick until the very last drop, while water remains behind.

Oil symbolizes constancy and inner attachment: it flows wholly toward its purpose, unlike water which separates. This reflects Israel’s unwavering inner bond with God.

And thus Israel is compared to oil, as it is written: “A fresh olive…”

The comparison teaches that Israel, like oil, contains a unique essence that rises and remains distinct.

And as the Midrash states: just as oil does not mix with other liquids, so too Israel.

This Midrash reinforces the idea that the Jewish soul remains separate and elevated, even when surrounded by foreign influences.

And this was the salvation of Chanuka: the Greeks sought to mislead Israel through “wisdom,” and thus the inner divine knowledge at the root of Jewish souls was revealed, drawing them to truth. This is the superiority of knowledge over wisdom.

The miracle clarified the eternal distinction between intellectual brilliance (wisdom) and God-rooted awareness (knowledge). True redemption emerged from the awakening of this inner knowledge.

Understand all this deeply, and it will be further explained with God’s help.

The Sefat Emet concludes by urging the reader to contemplate these teachings, hinting that later passages will elaborate on this theme.

Summary: Greece represents a force of deception through superficial wisdom, but Israel holds an innate point of divine knowledge that reveals truth. Chanuka highlights this through the symbol of oil, which mirrors the Jewish soul’s purity, constancy, and separation from falsehood.
