Light of the Soul For תרל”ד 9
(ליל ה) כתיב נר ה’ נשמת אדם.
“It is written: ‘The lamp of God is the human soul.’”
The Sefat Emet teaches that a person is created to illuminate the world, like a lamp that carries divine light.
שהאדם נברא להאיר בעוה”ז כמ”ש ככוכבים כו’.
“For the human being was created to shine in this world, as it is said, ‘like the stars,’ etc.”
The soul’s purpose is to radiate holiness outward, similar to the celestial lights above.
ולזאת בנ”י הדליקו המנורה וכ’ במדרש כדי להעלותכם שמאירין למי שמאיר לכל העולם כו’.
“Therefore Israel lit the Menorah, and it is written in the Midrash that this was in order to elevate you, who shine to the One who illuminates the whole world.”
Lighting the Menorah expresses that Israel serves as a vessel reflecting the divine source of all light.
פי’ שבנ”י הם כלי לקבל הארה הבאה מהשי”ת ע”י התורה והם נר שהוא כלי לקבל האור.
“This means that Israel are a vessel to receive the illumination that comes from God through the Torah, and they are a lamp that receives the light.”
The Torah is the flow of divine light, and Israel is the lamp designed to hold and transmit it.
וז”ש עדות שהשכינה שורה כו’.
“And this is what is meant by ‘a testimony that the Divine Presence rests,’ etc.”
The presence of light within the community testifies to God’s indwelling among them.
וכן בימים אלו שנשאר מצוה בנרות הללו הוא רמז שבנ”י יאירו במעשיהם.
“And so in these days, when the mitzvah of these lights remains, it is a hint that Israel should shine through their deeds.”
The Chanukah candles symbolize the illumination that arises from righteous action.
והנה בימים אלו דלקו המנורה בנס במשהו שמן שהי’ להם.
“And behold, in those days the Menorah burned miraculously with the small amount of oil they had.”
The miracle demonstrates that even minimal spiritual resources can radiate boundless light when elevated to God.
ונקודה משהו יש בכל איש ישראל להשי”ת גם עתה.
“And even now, there is a tiny point within every Jew that belongs to God.”
This inner spark is the personal ‘oil’ that can ignite spiritual illumination in each individual.
ואפשר זה ענין הלל ג”כ מלשון בהלו נרו עלי ראשי.
“And perhaps this is also the meaning of Hallel, from the expression ‘when His lamp shone upon my head.’”
Praising God causes the inner divine light to shine more brightly within a person.
וכ”כ בפסיקתא בחנוכה הלל ע”ש שכ’ אל ה’ ויאר לנו כו’.
“And so it is written in the Pesiqta regarding Chanukah: Hallel is named for the verse ‘To the Lord, who has shone light upon us,’ etc.”
The recitation of Hallel itself draws divine illumination toward the community.
ובנ”י מאירין ע”י השבח להשי”ת בכל לב כדכתיב התהללו בשם קדשו ג”כ הפי’ כנ”ל.
“And Israel shines through praising God with all their heart, as it is written, ‘Glory in His holy Name,’ which also reflects this interpretation.”
Whole-hearted praise is one of the primary ways Israel emits spiritual light into the world.
