Renewal Through Chanukah For תרל”א 7

“My revered grandfather explained: one who is accustomed to kindling the lamp draws illumination and renewal into what has become habitual.”

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Chanuka light breaks through spiritual routine, bringing fresh divine vitality.

“So too he explained the phrase ‘let the foot perish,’ meaning the end of the habitual steps of the Tarmodites, the removal of habit and nature.”

Chanuka signifies overcoming the deadening forces of habit and natural limitation.

“Thus: ‘A lamp for my foot are Your words,’ ‘He dips his foot in oil,’ and similar verses.”

The foot represents the lowest, most habitual aspect of life; the lamp elevates it.

“According to this, the name Chanuka also indicates renewal.”

The holiday is itself an expression of divine rejuvenation.

“For they were under the hand of Greece in exile, and all four kingdoms operate within nature and physicality.”

Greek rule symbolizes oppressive materialism that stifles spiritual creativity.

“As it is written: ‘There is nothing new under the sun.’”

Within the natural order there is no true renewal.

“But through a miracle, which transcends nature, renewal comes automatically.”

Miracle reopens the channel from above the natural order.

“This is dedication and renewal as stated above.”

Chanuka unites the concepts of initiation and ongoing spiritual refreshment.

“In truth, all exile exists only to bring about continual renewal.”

Exile awakens dormant spiritual capacities.

“So explains the Zohar: the ‘poor, wise child,’ the good inclination, constantly threatened…”

Its struggle generates perpetual spiritual freshness.

“But when there is no fear, habit returns.”

Ease can lead to spiritual stagnation.

“Therefore the evil inclination is called the ‘old king.’”

The evil inclination thrives on routine and complacency.

“All exile is only in order that renewal follow.”

Suffering catalyzes transformation.

“Thus, after leaving Greek rule, the kingship of Heaven was renewed for them.”

Redemption restores spiritual sovereignty.

“The miracle of Chanuka helps draw illumination from above.”

The lights connect the natural world to its transcendent root.

“‘Praise, servants of God,’ and not servants of Greece.”

The miracle clarified Israel’s true allegiance.

“It seems Israel was then in a low state, accepting nature without resisting Greece.”

This weakness made divine intervention necessary.

“Nevertheless, God fought their battle.”

Because inwardly they remained bound to Heaven.

“This clarified that they belong only to the kingship of Heaven.”

Exile does not sever their essential bond.

“Therefore: ‘Praise, servants of God.’”

They could now accept the divine yoke anew.

“The kingship of Heaven brings renewal.”

Connection to the divine root is ever-fresh.

“Thus the Sages said: Chanuka is salvation for Israel in exile.”

It reveals the purpose of exile: renewal.

“‘His heart is steadfast, trusting in God’ ends with the letters of Chanuka.”

Chanuka strengthens trust amid exile.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka is the triumph of renewal over habit, of divine transcendence over nature, and of the kingship of Heaven over foreign rule; exile itself serves only to awaken deeper spiritual freshness.
