Passover
“In the verse: ‘While the King was still at His table, my nard gave forth its fragrance.’”
The Sefat Emet teaches that this verse hints to a spiritual revelation that occurred before the formal giving of the Torah.
“This was fulfilled at the Song at the Sea.”
The fragrance symbolizes the outpouring of faith expressed by Israel when they sang at the sea.
“For this song is a section of the Torah that the Children of Israel brought forth from their hearts before the Torah was given.”
Their spontaneous song revealed an inner connection to Torah that preceded Sinai.
“And this is testimony that Israel is inherently cleaving to the Torah.”
The Sefat Emet emphasizes that their attachment to Torah is essential, not acquired.
“For in truth the Torah is the Names of the Holy One, blessed be He, and as is taught: ‘The Torah and the Holy One are one.’”
Thus Israel’s bond with Torah links them directly to the Divine essence.
“Therefore, although there is a time and season for everything under the heavens…”
Revelation usually comes at its appointed moment.
“Meaning the revelation of the Torah, as it is written: ‘And the Lord descended upon Mount Sinai.’”
Normally, Torah is revealed in a set, descending order.
“But at the splitting of the sea, they saw God, as it is written: ‘This is my God’; thus the root of the Torah was revealed to them while the King was still at His table, before He descended upon Mount Sinai.”
They experienced a revelation of the Torah’s essence even before its formal giving.
“And this is what they said in the song: ‘They preceded You.’”
Their praise anticipated Sinai, expressing readiness for the future Torah.
“Therefore it is written ‘then he will sing’ in the future tense, for it hints to what was destined—to the giving of the Torah.”
The future tense signals the Torah yet to be revealed.
“And they opened the root of the Torah, as the Midrash teaches on the verse: ‘She opened her mouth with wisdom.’”
Israel activated the primordial source of Torah through their song of faith.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that at the Song at the Sea, Israel accessed the inner root of Torah before Sinai, revealing their essential bond to the Divine wisdom and anticipating the future giving of the Torah.
