ויכתוב משה כו’ מוצאיהם למסעיהם כו’
And Moshe wrote their travels…
כי אלו המסעות היו בפרטות ענין המ”ט שערי טומאה שיצאו מהם בכלל ביציאת מצרים ואח”כ תקנו בהמסעות בפרט.
(The importance of the record of the travels is) because it is these travels that are the individual detailed extraction from the 49 levels of impurity, that Bnei Yisrael originally extracted themselves from in the exodus from Mitzrayim. Now each one of these travels is a specific stage, that they repaired in their travels.
ועם ז’ מסעות שחזרו הם מ”ט.
(If we calculate the 42 placed they encamped in) plus the 7 camps which they returned to, we get 49 (camps, which parallel the 49 levels of impurity).
וזה מעלה גדולה למרע”ה שחזר לבנ”י כל תהלוכות הנהגתו מיציאת מצרים עד ביאתם לארץ.
This is testitfies to Moshe’s greatness, that he went with Bnei Yisrael through all these travails, from Mitzrayim, till they entered Eretz Yisrael. (Even though he didn’t need it for himself, he was prepared to go through all these stages for their sake).
וכן צריך להיות לכל איש ישראל שנקרא מהלך וצריך לזכור בסוף כל מדריגותיו את כל אשר עבר עליו מהתחלת מהלכו.
(Just as at the end of Bnei Yisrael’s journey, all the stages of their travails a recorded), so too each and every one of Yisrael, who we are called מהלך – someone who moves, needs to remember at the end of all the stages, all those things that he went through, from the beginning of his journey (in this world).
וכן מצינו ביעקב אע”ה במקלי עברתי את הירדן הזה וכל אשר עבר עליו באותן כ’ שנה לא שכח מדריגה ראשונה ועי”ז בא להכנעה אמיתית:
Similarly we see this idea with Yaakov, who (when leaving the house of Lavan, recalled his original journey to Lavan’s house when he states) “For with my staff I crossed the Jordan”. And he recalled all that he had gone through in the past 20 years, and he did not forget his original level. By doing so he gained a true level of humility.
