Balak תרל”ב (#5 – essay)
וירא בלק כו’ ויגר כו’ מאוד כי רב הוא. כתיב מה רב טובך כו’ אור הגנוז כו’ כי הקב”ה גנז אור התורה במעשה בראשית וע”ז כ’ וירא אלקים כו’ כל אשר עשה כו’ טוב מאוד ודרשו חז”ל על מה”מ ויצה”ר ע”ש. ועבודתינו הוא למצוא הארה הגנוזה ואז נתגלה האמת ומכניעין הכל להקב”ה. ובנ”י דור המדבר כן היו שהאירו אור הגנוז בכל מקום מסעם. וכתיב וירא בלק שבע”כ ראה מה שנתגלה כבוד מלכותו עין בעין נראה כו’ וזה הי’ נקרא לבלק הרשע כיסוי עינים כמ”ש כסה כו’ עין הארץ. כי אין הרשע יכול להסתכל באמת. ויגר כו’ מאוד מבחי’ מאוד הנ”ל שהיה עומד שיבררו בנ”י כל הבירור כראוי וז”ש כי רב הוא כנ”ל. וקודם שהלכו בנ”י לא”י הי’ זה הכנה להתקשר באור הגנוז כנ”ל. The words used in the Torah to describe Moav’s fear of Bnei Yisrael כי רב הוא “for they were great”, are connected to the words מה רב טובך How great is Your goodness that You have hidden for the righteous. This good refers to the hidden light of Torah. When HaShem created the world the light was so great, and HaShem saw that it could be misused by the wicked. He therefore hid that light away for the righteous in the world to come. This light however can also still be accessed in this world, via the Torah. The Gemara furthermore explains that when HaShem saw that all He had created was “very good טוב מאוד” this actually refers to the angel of death and the evil inclination.
Our mission in this world is to uncover this light that is hidden in the world. The revelation of this light causes everything to become subjected to HaShem. (Just as the evil inclination when used properly is really an impetus to push us to greater heights).
This was what Bnei Yisrael were doing in the wilderness. By living a supernatural life completely devoted to HaShem and not subject to the rules of nature, they were constantly revealing HaShem’s light in every place they encountered. This is essentially what bothered Moav. They could not stand this revelation of HaShem, and as they said to Balak “The nation that has left Mitzrayim…has covered the eye of the land”. This revelation of HaShem’s light was so painful for the wicked because they could not withstand the revelation of truth, they called it a “covering of the eye”.
This is why Moav was very מאוד scared. They were afraid of the “טוב מאוד very good” that is hidden in the world and is now becoming revealed. As Bnei Yisrael travelled they revealed the good and took out all the good in nature בירור which was their preparation of entering Eretz Yisrael, where they could truly connect to the hidden light.
