Jacob’s Spiritual Mission Vayishlach
“And Jacob sent angels before him…”
The Sefat Emet begins by questioning why Jacob initiated the encounter with Esau, seemingly awakening hostility.
And they ask: Why did he send [them] ahead of him, arousing hatred?
The commentators challenge Jacob’s strategy, wondering why he would provoke Esau before meeting him.
But the answer is that he wished to draw him toward the Diaspora, and when he himself would arrive in the Land of Israel, he would be in complete wholeness, as it is written, “And Jacob came whole.”
Jacob sought to confront Esau outside the sanctity of the Land so that upon entering Israel he could attain full spiritual integrity.
And this too is true: Jacob himself certainly did not fear him, and once he entered the Land and rose to a higher level, Esau would have no power over him.
Jacob’s fear was not personal; in the spiritual elevation of the Land of Israel, Esau held no authority over him.
But for our sake, the seed of Israel, he wished to enter into the thick of the challenge and wage the battles with Esau in all three modes: appeasement, gift, and war.
Jacob modeled the threefold approach we would need in future generations when confronting the forces symbolized by Esau.
Therefore he feared, as the Zohar states, because he placed himself in danger.
His fear was a natural result of choosing to enter a spiritually hazardous situation for the sake of his descendants.
And this is what he resolved by saying: “And You said: I will surely do good to you… and I will make your seed…”
Jacob reminded God of the promise of blessing and protection that would sustain him through this chosen trial.
And we have explained elsewhere the meaning of “I will surely do good with you”—that the Holy One does good to all, through the agency of our father Jacob.
Jacob serves as a channel through which divine beneficence flows to the world.
And so he said: “I am small compared to all the kindnesses… the truth You have done with Your servant.”
Jacob acknowledges that the divine acts of kindness and truth manifest through him exceed his own sense of worthiness.
Meaning: through Your servant You effect salvations, kindnesses, and truth—and I am small compared to all this.
Jacob humbly recognizes that he is merely the vessel for God’s actions, not their source.
But as You desired, You have done.
Ultimately, all accomplishment stems solely from divine will.
And our father Jacob sensed how the entire world depended on him; therefore he entered all these situations to prepare for future generations, as explained above.
Jacob’s actions were undertaken with full awareness of their cosmic and generational impact, shaping the spiritual path for all Israel.
Summary: Jacob’s confrontation with Esau was not for his own safety but to establish patterns for future generations, acting as a conduit for divine blessing and engaging Esau’s forces in all necessary modes before entering the spiritual wholeness of the Land of Israel.
