Trust in Divine Protection Vayishlach
Sefat Emet, Genesis, Vayishlach 19:4
In the verse, “And You said: I will surely do good with you.”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing God’s promise to Jacob that He will indeed bestow goodness upon him.
But it is difficult: if so, why was he afraid?
The promise seems to contradict Jacob’s fear upon meeting Esau.
But I heard from my master and grandfather, of blessed memory, an explanation: “He was afraid and distressed” — he was distressed over the fact that he had become afraid of him.
His distress was not only about Esau, but about the very presence of fear within himself.
And it may be said that he surely knew that the Holy One, blessed be He, would protect him, just as He had promised.
Jacob’s faith in the divine promise remained intact.
Rather, this is what the verse means: “And You said: I will surely do good with you.”
The Sefat Emet returns to the divine promise to clarify its deeper meaning.
The meaning is that he should himself feel this goodness, as it is written, “You shall surely help him.”
The goodness is not merely external salvation, but an inner experience of divine assistance.
And since he became afraid, as it is written, “I am afraid of him,”
The presence of fear indicated a lack of that inner sense of divine goodness.
over this he prayed — that he should have a connection to the salvation.
Jacob prayed not merely for rescue, but to be inwardly attached to the divine goodness promised to him.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob trusted God’s promise, yet felt distress over his own fear. The true “goodness” promised to him was an inner awareness of divine help, and sensing that fear had disrupted this, he prayed to regain a deep connection to the salvation.
