Divine Love in Chanukah Miracles For תרל”ב 2

“It is a wondrous thing about the miracle of Chanukah, that it occurred so they could fulfill the commandment of the Menorah.”

The Sefat Emet begins by framing the miracle as purposeful: the divine intervention was arranged specifically to enable the mitzvah of lighting the Menorah to be carried out.

“Yet the light is not needed; all that matters is fulfilling His will.”

The Menorah is not for practical illumination. Its purpose is symbolic and devotional—the act of fulfilling God’s command.

“And since they had no exemptions.”

Despite lacking sufficient oil, they were not considered excused from the mitzvah; God ensured they could still perform it.

“And this is an extra measure of affection—that the Holy One desires the illumination of the Menorah’s lights to come through our lighting.”

The Sefat Emet emphasizes divine love: God wants *us* to bring the holy light into the world, partnering with Him through the mitzvah.

“And it was also left for future generations that there is assistance.”

The miracle established an ongoing spiritual support available in every generation, not only at the time of the Maccabees.

“In these days, for the Children of Israel, to do His will more than according to the usual order and conduct of the whole year.”

Chanukah is a period when elevated spiritual capacity is granted—enabling Jews to serve God beyond their norm.

“In a miraculous and wondrous manner.”

This heightened ability operates not naturally but through a channel of ongoing miracle rooted in the original Chanukah light.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Chanukah miracle was not merely practical but an expression of divine love: God wanted the Menorah’s light to shine specifically through Israel’s action. This established, for all generations, a special spiritual assistance during Chanukah, enabling a heightened fulfillment of God’s will in a miraculous way.
