Miracles Elevate the Soul For תרל”ו 3
It is written, “You have given those who fear You a banner to be raised.”
The verse teaches that a miracle granted to one who reveres God serves to elevate and uplift that person.
For just as the Holy One, blessed be He, performs miracles for us, so too must we serve Him beyond the limits of nature.
Divine miracles call forth from us a higher, super-natural level of devotion.
For the illumination of the miracle done for a person adds strength above the natural order and raises his level.
The spiritual light released through a miracle empowers a person to ascend to a higher state.
And this is “to be raised.”
The elevation of the individual is the true meaning of the verse’s “raising of the banner.”
Therefore, in these days we must strengthen ourselves in His service.
Chanuka is a time when the miracles invite renewed spiritual effort.
And thus when we bless “Who has brought us to this time,” the meaning is that we have a point of contact and attachment to the light of these days.
The blessing expresses that we are granted access to the unique spiritual light of Chanuka.
And surely every Jew has a connection to the illumination of the miracles, even if he does not feel it within himself.
The Sefat Emet affirms an inherent bond between every Jew and the miraculous light, regardless of one’s sensitivity.
One must believe in this.
Faith itself is the gateway to accessing the hidden illumination.
And according to the measure of one’s faith and longing, one can afterward also feel the illumination, as noted above.
The more one believes and yearns, the more the light of the miracle becomes experientially felt.
Summary: Miracles elevate a person beyond nature, and Chanuka opens access to this illumination. Through belief and yearning, every individual can connect to and eventually sense the miracle-light of these days.
