Passover

It is taught: A maidservant saw at the Sea what the prophets themselves never saw.

The Sefat Emet opens by emphasizing the unparalleled revelation at the Red Sea, surpassing even prophetic vision.

For in this Song is contained everything that would happen to Israel until the future.

He explains that the Song of the Sea encompasses the entirety of Israel’s destiny, past and future.

As it is written: “Stand and see the salvation of God that He will perform for you today.”

The verse frames the moment as one of direct divine revelation.

“Will perform” is a future tense, meaning they saw all the salvations that God would bring for Israel throughout all generations.

The future tense signals that the people perceived not only the present miracle but all future redemptions.

And “today” refers back to the beginning of the verse.

“Today” modifies “stand and see,” stressing that the revelation of future events occurred on that very day.

Meaning: Stand and see today the salvation of God that He will perform for you.

The phrasing joins present vision with future action—seeing today that which will happen later.

And it is taught: All the prophets prophesied only regarding the days of the Messiah, but regarding the ultimate future—“No eye has seen… what He will perform for those who await Him.”

Prophecy is limited to messianic times; the ultimate future is beyond prophetic sight.

Yet at the Sea they saw what God will perform even in the ultimate future.

The revelation at the Sea pierced beyond prophetic boundaries.

Something the prophets themselves did not see.

This confirms the uniqueness of that moment.

For it says here “He will perform,” and it says there “He will perform.”

The matching wording links the Sea’s revelation with the hidden future.

And so it is taught in the Mekhilta: “Stand and see” was in the spirit of holiness and prophecy.

The Mekhilta supports the idea that the people experienced prophetic vision at the Sea.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the revelation at the Red Sea exceeded all prophetic visions, granting Israel a glimpse of all future redemptions—something normally reserved for the ultimate future beyond prophecy.
