Transforming Judgment Into Peace
The matter of the letter yud that was added to the name of Pinchas.
The Sfas Emes opens by examining why Hashem added the letter yud to Pinchas's name, signaling that this letter carries a special significance.
For it is the letter of peace, since in the letter yud there is no hollow space or break, as there is in all the other letters.
He explains that the yud is the letter of peace because, unlike other letters, it has no inner empty space or break within its form.
And so too with the letter vav.
The same wholeness without any internal gap is found in the letter vav.
And these two are two completenesses, as it is written, "Peace, peace, to the one who is far and to the one who is near" (Yeshayah 57:19).
Together the yud and vav represent two distinct forms of completeness, alluded to by the pasuk that speaks of peace to the far and to the near.
And it is brought in the holy Zohar that "to the one who is far" refers to Yaakov, and "to the one who is near" refers to Yosef.
The Zohar identifies the "far" one as Yaakov and the "near" one as Yosef, attaching each to one of these two completenesses.
And these are two completenesses: Yaakov makes peace between Avraham and Yitzchak.
Yaakov's completeness lies in his bringing harmony between the opposing attributes embodied by Avraham (kindness) and Yitzchak (judgment).
And this is what is written, "And I shall return in peace to my father's house" (Bereishis 28:21) — to sweeten the judgments of Yitzchak.
His vow to return in peace to his father's house expresses this role of sweetening and softening the harsh judgments of Yitzchak.
And so too Yosef makes peace among the Shevatim.
Yosef parallels this by establishing peace and unity among the twelve Shevatim.
And it is brought that Pinchas is the gematria of two hundred and eight, the same as Yitzchak.
He notes that the numerical value of Pinchas equals two hundred and eight, matching that of Yitzchak, linking Pinchas to Yitzchak's character.
And he was of the aspect of the attribute of strict judgment, while the Kehunah is of the aspect of kindness, and the Kehunah was given to him as a gift.
Pinchas, like Yitzchak, was rooted in the attribute of strict judgment, yet the Kehunah, which flows from kindness, was bestowed on him as a gift.
And this is as it is written, that when Bnei Yisrael are meritorious, even the left side becomes the right.
This reflects the principle that when Bnei Yisrael are worthy, even the side of judgment (the left) is transformed into kindness (the right).
And so too there is from this in the holy Zohar, that it was for this reason that the Kehunah needed to be given to him, for one who has slain a soul is disqualified for the Kehunah.
The Zohar reinforces this: precisely because Pinchas had taken a life, the Kehunah had to be granted to him to elevate and transform that act of judgment.
And the hint is, as we said, that he was of the aspect of the attribute of strict judgment.
The hint embedded in all this is that Pinchas stood in the aspect of strict judgment, which is exactly why his elevation to kindness is so meaningful.
And it is written, "He makes peace in His heights" (Iyov 25:2) — the Holy One, Blessed is He, makes peace between the angels of kindness and of strength.
He brings the pasuk that Hashem makes peace in the heavens, reconciling the angels rooted in kindness with those rooted in strength.
And so too there is a single angel that contains both of these attributes.
Beyond reconciling separate angels, there exists a single angel that holds both attributes united within itself.
And so too Pinchas, in this world, was given the covenant of peace to be a Kohen, even though there was in him the aspect of strict judgment, as above.
Pinchas mirrors this angel in the physical world: though he embodied judgment, he was given the covenant of peace and made a Kohen, fusing both attributes in one person.
Summary: The Sfas Emes explores why Hashem added the letter yud to the name of Pinchas, explaining that the yud, like the vav, is a letter of peace because it contains no internal break, representing wholeness. Drawing on the Zohar's reading of "peace to the far and to the near" as Yaakov and Yosef, he shows that true peace means uniting opposing forces — Yaakov reconciling the kindness of Avraham with the judgment of Yitzchak, and Yosef uniting the Shevatim. Pinchas, whose gematria equals Yitzchak, was himself rooted in the attribute of strict judgment, yet was granted the Kehunah, which stems from kindness, as a gift. This reflects the principle that when Bnei Yisrael are meritorious, the left side of judgment is transformed into the right side of kindness, just as the Holy One, Blessed is He, makes peace among the angels and as a single angel can contain both attributes. Thus Pinchas became the living embodiment of the covenant of peace, fusing judgment and kindness within one person.
