Hanukkah and Future Redemption
Hanukkah · Yosef and Yehuda · Tribes · Geulah · Rosh Chodesh
On Chanuka we read from the passage of the tribal princes.
This introduces Chanuka as connected to the sanctification and dedication of Israel, hinted through the offerings of the tribal leaders.
For it is stated that the three pilgrimage festivals correspond to the merit of the three Patriarchs.
Each festival channels the spiritual quality of one of the Avot, forming the foundation of Israel’s yearly holiness.
And corresponding to the twelve tribes there should have been twelve festival months, but because of the sin of the Golden Calf this did not occur; yet in the future they will become festival days, as written in the Tur, Orach Chaim, Laws of Rosh Chodesh.
The Sefat Emet teaches that ideally each tribe would manifest a unique month of holiness, but human failure diminished this; the future redemption will restore it.
And Chanuka is a dedication and a hint toward those future festivals.
Chanuka serves as a prototype of the renewed holiness that will emerge in the days to come.
And a hint to this is that Rosh Chodesh, Chanuka, and Purim are mentioned in the last three blessings of the prayer.
The grouping of these days reflects their shared root in the tribes rather than the patriarchal festivals.
For this is the power of the tribes.
These days draw from the collective spiritual energy of the twelve tribes.
And it was already written in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, that praise and thanksgiving correspond to the qualities of Joseph and Judah.
Each of these two tribes expresses a distinct spiritual mode—Judah in prayer and Joseph in expansive blessing.
As it is written: “From the straits I called out to God; God answered me with expansiveness.”
This verse contains both constriction and expansiveness, reflecting Judah’s cry and Joseph’s deliverance.
For the divine Name Y‑H appears in Judah, representing the aspect of constriction.
Judah embodies the struggle from narrowness, the plea emerging from difficulty.
And “with expansiveness” refers to Joseph, as in the verse “A testimony in Joseph is His name.”
Joseph’s spiritual nature expresses abundance, success, and widening of boundaries.
And these two aspects span from Rosh Chodesh until the fifteenth of the month.
The waxing of the moon symbolizes Joseph’s growth toward fullness.
And Judah’s aspect is from the fifteenth until month’s end, hinted in the kings of the House of David until Zedekiah, the days of the moon’s decline.
The waning moon represents the diminishing of Judah’s sovereignty in exile.
“Please, Lord, bring salvation” belongs to this aspect, for the Messiah son of David will redeem us.
The cry for salvation stems from Judah’s quality, the plea that emerges amid decline.
And afterward “grant success, please,” corresponds to Joseph, a man who succeeds, and this is in the days of the moon’s ascent from Rosh Chodesh.
Joseph’s trait is prosperity and ascent, symbolized by the waxing moon.
And this is “with expansiveness,” the aspect of the Rosh Chodesh Musaf prayer.
Musaf expresses spiritual widening—Joseph’s power.
And we first request…
The order of prayer mirrors the spiritual sequence the Sefat Emet is outlining.
Salvation from the entanglement among the nations and the refinement of the waste, as it says: “Save us and gather us…”
The first step is purification from exile and confusion.
And afterward to glory in Your praise.
Only after refinement can true praise—Joseph’s expansiveness—be expressed.
Summary: Chanuka hints to future festivals linked to the twelve tribes. Judah represents constriction and the plea for salvation, while Joseph represents expansiveness and success. The lunar cycle mirrors their spiritual roles, and the structure of prayer reflects the journey from exile to praise.
