איתא בס' של"ה טעם שנקרא חנוכה שהוא חינוך העולם ממש שכל העולם נברא רק לכבודו בשביל התורה ומצות והרשעים שרצו להשבית המצות החריבו העולם.
It is stated in the book Shlah that the reason it is called Ḥanukkah is that it is truly the “education” of the world, for the entire world was created only for His glory, for the sake of Torah and mitzvot; and the wicked, who sought to abolish the mitzvot, destroyed the world.
The Sefat Emet cites the Shlah: Ḥanukkah represents the world’s re‑education, for the world exists only through Torah and mitzvot, and their suspension is a form of destruction.
וכשחזרו בני ישראל לקיום המצות כאלו נתחנך העולם ע"ש.
And when the Israelites returned to fulfilling the mitzvot, it was as if the world itself was re‑educated.
Renewed observance revitalizes creation, restoring its purpose as though inaugurating it anew.
ויתכן ג"כ לרמוז כי באמת עוה"ז הוא רק חינוך לעוה"ב.
And it may also hint that this world is only an education for the World to Come.
This world is preparatory—training for higher spiritual existence.
כאשר חז"ל רמזו העוה"ז דומה לפרוזדור בפני העוה"ב וצריכין לעשות עוה"ז טפל והכנה לעוה"ב.
As our Sages hinted: this world resembles a corridor before the World to Come, and we must make this world secondary and a preparation for the next.
Chazal’s metaphor teaches that earthly life is a passageway whose value lies in preparing for eternal closeness to God.
וזה רמז הפתח כמ"ש חז"ל פתחו לי כחודה של מחט.
And this is the hint of “the opening,” as our Sages said: “Open for Me like the eye of a needle.”
The “opening” symbolizes the minimal yet essential human initiative required in this world.
היינו קצת עבודת השי"ת שיש בעוה"ז ואני אפתח לכם כפתחו של היכל הוא בעוה"ב ובג"ע.
Meaning: the small measure of Divine service in this world, and I will open for you like the opening of the Sanctuary—referring to the World to Come and Gan Eden.
A tiny effort here elicits a vast opening of spiritual possibility above.
וכמו קטן שמחנכין אותו מעט מעט כדאיתא ברמב"ם המשל מתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה.
And like a child who is educated little by little, as the Rambam teaches in the parable: from acting not for its own sake, one comes to act for its own sake.
Spiritual growth proceeds gradually, beginning with imperfect motives that eventually become purified.
כן הוא כל העבודה בעוה"ז אינו בשלימות האמת.
So too all service in this world is not in complete truth.
Human action here cannot yet attain full purity or perfection.
רק הכל חינוך ורגילות לזכות להיות לנו מהלכים בין העומדים לפניו ית' במרום.
Rather, everything is education and habituation to merit becoming “walkers” among those who stand before Him, blessed be He, on high.
The entirety of earthly life functions as training so that we may ultimately stand—and advance—in the presence of God in the higher realms.
Summary: Ḥanukkah symbolizes the re‑education of the world, reflecting the idea that this world itself is only a preparatory training for the next. All mitzvah‑observance and spiritual labor here serve as gradual education, where even small efforts open vast spiritual gateways above.
