Love and the Chanukah Light

עוד נראה מזוזה בימין ונ"ח משמאל הוא בחי' משה ואהרן.
“It further appears: the mezuzah on the right and the Chanukah light on the left represent the aspects of Moses and Aaron.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the placement of mezuzah and Chanukah light reflects two complementary spiritual forces embodied by Moses and Aaron.
מזוזה תורה אור.
“The mezuzah is ‘Torah light.’”
The mezuzah symbolizes the illumination of Torah associated with Moses.
ונר חנוכה נר מצוה בחי' אהרן כמ"ש הרמב"ן בפי' המדרש שלך לעולם קיימת על נ"ח.
“And the Chanukah lamp is ‘the lamp of a mitzvah,’ in the aspect of Aaron, as the Ramban explains on the midrash: ‘Yours shall remain forever’—referring to the Chanukah light.”
The Ramban teaches that Aaron’s light endures eternally through the Chanukah candles.
והענין הוא דכתיב מים רבים לא יוכלו לכבות כו' האהבה כו'.
“And the idea is that it is written: ‘Many waters cannot extinguish the love.’”
The Sefat Emet links Chanukah to the unquenchable love between Israel and God.
אם יתן איש כו' כל הון ביתו באהבה כו' יבוזו לו.
“If a man gives all the wealth of his house for love, they would scorn him.”
Love cannot be bought, nor can it be replaced with external substitutes.
ואהרן הוא בחי' אהבת חסד כללות בני ישראל ולכן נצטווה להדליק המנורה שהוא הרמז לשלהבת אהבת בנ"י לאביהן שבשמים.
“And Aaron is the aspect of loving‑kindness for all Israel; therefore he was commanded to light the Menorah, which hints to the flame of Israel’s love for their Father in Heaven.”
Aaron’s role was to awaken and elevate Israel’s inner love toward God.
והנה אהבה זו צריכה שמירה בשני אופנים שלא יכבו הרשעים את האהבה.
“This love requires guarding in two ways—that the wicked not extinguish it.”
The Sefat Emet identifies two threats that can diminish spiritual love.
כאשר עבר עלינו במלכיות אלו שעמדו להשכיח מאתנו אהבת ה'.
“As happened to us under these kingdoms who sought to make us forget the love of God.”
The Greek decrees attempted to suppress Israel’s inner devotion.
וכמו כן לשמור שלא יתערבו אחרים להשתתף באהבה זו כי גם בזה הם מכבים אש האהבה.
“And likewise, we must guard that others not mix into this love, for this too extinguishes the fire of love.”
External influences can dilute or distort Israel’s unique bond with God.
ושניהם נתקיימו בחנוכה שמתחלה היה לכורש חלק בביהמ"ק והשי"ת עזר לנו ונתקן זה כמש"ל.
“Both were fulfilled on Chanukah, for at first Cyrus had a share in the Temple, but God helped us and this was corrected.”
Chanukah restored Israel’s exclusive spiritual connection to the Temple.
ונדחה מזה.
“And he was pushed away from it.”
The foreign claim was removed.
וז"ש אם יתן כו' הון ביתו כו' בוז יבוזו לו.
“Thus it says: ‘If he gives all the wealth of his house… they will scorn him.’”
Worldly power or generosity cannot replace true covenantal love.
ואח"כ עמדו להשכיח תורת ה' ועזר לנו הקב"ה.
“And afterwards they sought to make us forget God’s Torah, but the Holy One helped us.”
The second threat—spiritual extinguishing—was also overturned.
וז"ש לא יוכלו לכבות כו'.
“Thus: ‘They cannot extinguish…’”
Divine love persists beyond all attempts to suppress it.
ולב' אלו תקנו הלל והודאה.
“For these two matters they established Hallel and thanksgiving.”
The liturgy reflects deliverance from both threats.
והם בחי' אהרן.
“And these are in the aspect of Aaron.”
Aaron embodies gratitude and love expressed through light.
ונשאר לדורות להדליק נר חנוכה הרמז כי לעולם יוכל איש ישראל לעורר גחלת אהבה בלב להקב"ה ובחנוכה מתעורר ביותר כנ"ל.
“And it remains for all generations to light the Chanukah lamp—the sign that every Jew can always awaken a spark of love for God, and on Chanukah it awakens even more.”
Chanukah preserves an eternal power to rekindle spiritual passion.
כי בנס דחנוכה נתעוררו לבות בני ישראל.
“For through the Chanukah miracle, the hearts of Israel were stirred.”
The miracle awakened collective inner return.
ואיתא בני בינה ימי שמונה קבעו.
“It is said: ‘Children of understanding established eight days.’”
The sages recognized the deeper meaning of the miracle.
נראה כי הבינו שהנס נעשה לעורר הלב לתשובה דאיתא ימינו פשוטה לקבל שבים.
“It seems they understood that the miracle was to awaken the heart to repentance, for it is said: ‘His right hand is extended to receive those who return.’”
Divine kindness during Chanukah is an invitation to return.
פי' כשהקב"ה מגלה אות אהבה וחסד הוא לעורר לתשובה.
“Meaning: when God reveals a sign of love and kindness, it is to awaken repentance.”
Every miracle is a call to spiritual renewal.
ובודאי שבו מתוך אהבת הנס כדאיתא ואח"כ באו בניך ופינו וטהרו את מקדשך.
“And certainly they returned through love of the miracle, as it says: ‘Then Your children came and cleared and purified Your Temple.’”
The physical cleansing mirrored inner purification.
והוא ע"י פינוי וטהרת הלב בתשובה לכן לשנה אחרת קבעום כשנשתנו לטובה בתשובה שלימה.
“And this came through clearing and purifying the heart in repentance; therefore the next year they established it, when they had been transformed for the good through complete repentance.”
The holiday became fixed once the inner change was complete.
ונקראו בני בינה ע"ש מבין דבר מתוך דבר.
“And they were called ‘children of understanding’ because they discerned one matter from another.”
The sages perceived the hidden meaning behind events.
וקבעו שמונה רמז לתשובה.
“And they established eight days as a hint to repentance.”
The number eight symbolizes transformation beyond the natural order.
ותשובה מתוך אהבה הוא מדת אהרן.
“And repentance born of love is the trait of Aaron.”
Aaron’s path is returning to God through heartfelt affection.
