The Akeidah oath as the unearned light of Shabbos
Now at the Akeidah, Hashem swore: "By Myself I have sworn..."
The Sefas Emes begins with the oath Hashem made to Avraham at the Akeidah and asks what purpose this oath served.
And what need was there for the oath? Rather, it is a preparation for the lowly later generations, when the merit of the Avos (zechus avos) has been exhausted and the yearning the Avos planted in them has been lost — concerning this He swore that He would never abandon us.
The oath was meant for distant generations who can no longer rely on zechus avos or on the inherited longing for Hashem; for them Hashem swore He would never forsake His people.
And so wrote Tosafos, that even when zechus avos has been exhausted, the bris avos (covenant of the fathers) has not been exhausted.
Tosafos distinguish between the merit of the Avos, which can run out, and their covenant, which endures forever.
For the oath stems from a lofty place that is above human grasp, and it does not depend on the deeds of those below, and no blemish (pegam) reaches there.
The oath issues from a level so exalted that human deeds cannot affect it and no sin can reach to damage it — an unbreakable bond.
And this is also the illumination that is revealed on Shabbos Kodesh, as it is taught: "I have a good gift in My treasure house," and it is called a "gift" (matanah) because it is not dependent on the avodah of those below.
Shabbos is this same supernal light — a "gift" from Hashem's hidden treasury, given freely rather than earned through human effort.
Therefore on Shabbos Kodesh the power of the Avos is aroused — and this is the illumination of the Three Meals (shalosh seudos) — when the yearning the Avos planted is lit up in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael.
On Shabbos, through the three seudos, the strength of the Avos reawakens and rekindles in Jewish hearts the longing for Hashem that the Avos planted within them.
By way of the "gift" and the oath, even though they are not worthy.
This reawakening comes as an unearned gift and through the oath, reaching Bnei Yisrael even when their own deeds do not merit it.
And so I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, that Shabbos, which comes from the treasure house — the hidden place — also awakens in the souls of Bnei Yisrael the hidden light within them, which during the week one cannot bring from potential into actuality, but on Shabbos Kodesh the inner dimension (penimiyus) is aroused.
The Chiddushei HaRim taught that just as Shabbos itself comes from Hashem's hidden treasury, it awakens the hidden inner light buried in every Jew — a penimiyus that weekday effort cannot draw out, but which Shabbos brings to the surface.
And this is the power of the Three Meals, as it is taught: "bread is the sustenance (se'adta) of the heart."
The shalosh seudos draw this hidden light into the inner self — for bread "sustains the heart," reaching the innermost point.
And so it is taught: "Whoever delights in Shabbos (me'aneg es haShabbos) is granted the requests of his heart" — that he is able to bring forth from potential into actuality the yearning hidden within him.
"Oneg Shabbos" earns one the desires of his heart precisely in this sense: he is empowered to actualize the latent longing for Hashem concealed inside him.
As it is written: "And take delight in Hashem, and He will grant you the requests of your heart."
The pasuk ties delighting in Hashem directly to receiving the heart's requests — namely, the realization of one's hidden yearning.
This is the oneg Shabbos of "upon Hashem," which is the aspect of the oath, as stated.
The delight of Shabbos "upon Hashem" flows from the unearned oath — the bond above human merit that Shabbos reveals.
And one may further say that by the power of this oath Hashem gave the Torah to Bnei Yisrael, for each one stands under oath from Har Sinai — since their souls departed at Matan Torah — and the deveikus to the Creator was engraved into their souls, as it is written "and eternal life He planted within us," which can never be extinguished.
The same oath underlies Matan Torah: every Jew stands sworn from Sinai, where their souls flew out and an indelible bond with Hashem was engraved into them — "eternal life He planted within us" — a flame that can never be put out.
And the Torah was given on Shabbos, and on it this power and the oath are aroused.
Since the Torah was given on Shabbos, every Shabbos reawakens that engraved bond and the oath of Sinai.
And this is the reading of the Torah on Shabbos. Understand these matters.
The public krias haTorah on Shabbos gives expression to this reawakened oath and the hidden bond with Hashem — a point the Sefas Emes invites us to contemplate.
Summary: Hashem's oath at the Akeidah was for the lowly later generations whose zechus avos and inherited yearning have run out; though the merit of the Avos can be exhausted, the bris avos cannot, for the oath stems from a place above human deeds that no sin can blemish. This is the very light of Shabbos — an unearned "gift" from Hashem's hidden treasury, revealed through the shalosh seudos, that awakens the hidden inner longing (penimiyus) in every Jew. The same oath underlies Matan Torah, where deveikus was engraved into every soul, which is why the Torah given on Shabbos is reawakened each Shabbos through its public reading.
