בפסוק עיניכם רואות כו' כי פי המדבר כו'.
“In the verse: ‘Your eyes see... that it is my mouth that speaks...’”
The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on Joseph’s assertion that the brothers can directly perceive that the speaking is truly his, hinting at a deeper spiritual identity revealed through the faculty of speech.
עפ"י מ"ש במ"א הרמז שדרשו חז"ל וירד מצרימה אנוס על פי הדבור.
“According to what is written elsewhere, the hint in the Sages’ teaching that ‘He went down to Egypt compelled by the Divine speech.’”
This refers to the midrash that Jacob’s descent to Egypt was not voluntary but driven by a Divine decree, associated with the spiritual quality of ‘speech.’
שהוא בחי' יוסף.
“This is the aspect of Joseph.”
Joseph embodies the spiritual dimension of speech, the channel through which Divine intention enters the world.
דאיתא בזוה"ק שהדיבור היה בגלות מצרים והוא בחי' השבטים כמ"ש וזאת אשר דבר להם אביהם.
“For the Zohar teaches that speech was in exile in Egypt, and this corresponds to the tribes, as it is written: ‘These are the words their father spoke to them.’”
The tribes represent fragmented or diminished speech, illustrating how the power of expression was exiled and concealed in Egypt.
ויוסף הוא פי הדיבור התקשרות בחי' הדיבור להקול.
“And Joseph is the mouth of speech, the connection of speech to the voice.”
Joseph restores unity between inner voice (kol) and outward communication (dibbur), enabling Divine truth to be articulated in the world.
וכן כ' אחר כך וידברו אליו את כל דברי יוסף אשר דיבר כו' ותחי כו'.
“Thus it is written later: ‘They spoke to him all the words of Joseph which he had spoken... and his spirit revived.’”
The revival of Jacob’s spirit reveals that Joseph’s words carried a unique spiritual force capable of restoring clarity and vitality.
מכלל שהיו דברים סתומים שהכירו מהן בחי' של יוסף הצדיק כמ"ש ואח"כ דברו אחיו אתו.
“This implies that there were hidden matters through which the brothers recognized Joseph’s true spiritual nature, as it says: ‘Afterward his brothers spoke with him.’”
Their renewed communication indicates a deeper recognition of Joseph’s inner holiness, conveyed subtly through his speech.
ורמז עיניכם רואות כו' כענין שכתוב במתן תורה רואים את הקולות.
“And the hint of ‘Your eyes see...’ is like the description at Sinai: ‘They saw the voices.’”
The perception of speech becomes so elevated that it can be ‘seen,’ meaning spiritually grasped with certainty.
וכל הכנת יוסף היה במצרים שיוכל אח"כ יעקב לירד שם.
“All of Joseph’s preparation in Egypt was so that Jacob could later descend there.”
Joseph spiritually established Egypt so that Jacob’s descent would not be a fall but a purposeful continuation of Divine mission.
כי הוא בחי' ממוצעת להמשיך כח הדעת בחי' יעקב להשבטים שהוא התגלות הדעת במעשה.
“For Joseph is the intermediary who draws the power of Jacob’s knowledge down to the tribes, which is the manifestation of knowledge in action.”
Joseph channels Jacob’s inner wisdom into practical expression within the life of the tribes.
ולכן מקודם לא ראה יעקב דרך שיוכל לילך למצרים עד שראה העגלות אשר שלח יוסף כו'.
“Therefore Jacob did not previously see a path to go to Egypt until he saw the wagons Joseph had sent.”
The wagons symbolized that Joseph had prepared a spiritual conduit through which Jacob could safely descend.
וזה הרמז ששלח יוסף פן תורש אתה וביתך.
“And this is the hint in Joseph’s message: ‘Lest you be dispossessed, you and your household.’”
Joseph warns of the risk of spiritual severance if Jacob does not descend through the proper channel established by Joseph.
וחלילה שלא חשב יוסף ליעקב אביו הרבה למעלה יותר ממנו.
“Heaven forbid that Joseph thought himself above his father Jacob.”
Joseph understood his role not as higher but as a conduit for Jacob’s light.
רק שידע שהתפשטות כחו של יעקב על ידו הוא.
“He only knew that the expansion of Jacob’s power occurred through him.”
Joseph recognized that he served as the channel through which Jacob’s influence reached the world.
פן תורש פי' שיופסק המשכת כח שלו לביתו וזרעו אחריו שמוכרח להיות ע"י יוסף כנ"ל.
“‘Lest you be dispossessed’ means that the flow of Jacob’s power to his household and descendants would cease, for it must come through Joseph.”
The continuity of Jacob’s spiritual lineage depends on Joseph’s mediating role.
וכן התנאי שכתב במדרש על מנת ויוסף ישית ידו כו'.
“Thus the condition written in the Midrash: ‘On the condition that Joseph will lay his hand...’”
This requirement symbolizes Joseph’s ongoing role as the channel of Jacob’s spiritual transmission.
שהוא גם לדורות.
“And this applies for all generations.”
The spiritual pattern of Joseph mediating Divine knowledge continues throughout Jewish history.
ע"י שמירת כחו של יוסף יכולין למצוא גאולה בכל מקום צר.
“Through preserving the power of Joseph, one can find redemption in any place of constriction.”
Joseph’s quality enables liberation even in spiritual or physical exile.
והוא התקשרות הדעת לכל המעשים לבטל אותם להדעת בחי' תורה ומצות.
“This is the binding of knowledge to all deeds, nullifying them to the knowledge — the aspect of Torah and mitzvot.”
Joseph represents the ability to infuse every action with awareness of its Divine source.
וע"י התשוקה והאהבה של המצות יש הארת התורה בכל מצוה והוא בחי' יוסף.
“And through desire and love for the commandments, the light of Torah illuminates each mitzvah — and this is the aspect of Joseph.”
Joseph embodies the power to awaken the inner light present in every mitzvah.
וד"ל:
“And this is enough to understand.”
The Sefat Emet signals that the teaching contains deeper layers beyond what is explicitly written.
