Standing at Teshuvah's Door
In the Midrash on 'Im shamoa' (Devarim 11:13), there is the teaching of 'a door within a door,' to be diligent at 'My doorways' and the 'mezuzah of My entrances' — just as the mezuzah is fixed and permanent and the doorpost does not move from its place, so too one who does this, know that you are receiving the Divine Presence.
The Sfas Emes opens with the Midrash on the parsha of Shema, which speaks of being diligent at Hashem's doorways like a fixed mezuzah, promising that one who does so merits to receive the Divine Presence.
'A door within a door' refers to the level of teshuvah, for it is taught that in the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even completely righteous tzaddikim cannot stand — for there is a higher 'hei' and a lower 'hei,' and concerning the higher 'hei' it is said 'He opens His hand' through teshuvah, and 'open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle,' which is the 'yud' that is within the 'hei,' and then the door is opened — for this applies to every tefillah that a person must daven.
He explains that 'a door within a door' alludes to teshuvah: there is a higher and lower letter 'hei' in Hashem's Name, and through teshuvah, even an opening as tiny as a needle's eye allows the inner door to swing open in every tefillah.
And when it is opened for him, then is the opportune moment to arouse tefillah and abundant mercy over his earlier deeds and to rectify the damage he caused in the past.
Once that door is opened to a person, it is the ideal moment to pour out tefillah and beg for mercy over his past deeds and to repair the damage he previously caused.
For when even a little comprehension is opened to a person, then is the time not to become haughty, chas v'shalom, but rather to rectify his earlier deeds, and a door within a door is opened to him, as above.
When a person gains even a small measure of spiritual insight, the right response is not pride but to use it to fix his earlier conduct, whereupon a deeper door is opened for him.
And he said that one should be fixed at the door like a mezuzah, and then know that you are receiving the Divine Presence.
The Midrash teaches that one must remain permanently stationed at the door like a mezuzah, and only then is he assured of receiving the Divine Presence.
This is a great assurance, for no tefillah ever returns empty, and a person must keep standing at the entrance until it is opened for him.
This is a powerful guarantee, since no tefillah is ever wasted, but it requires a person to persistently stand at the entrance until it opens for him.
And there are times when they open from Heaven, such as during Elul and the Ten Days of Teshuvah, which are days of favor.
There are designated times when the gates are opened from Above, namely Elul and the Ten Days of Teshuvah, which are days of special favor.
And according to how a person knocks throughout all the days of the year, so is it opened for him during these days.
The measure of how steadily a person 'knocks' through tefillah all year determines how much is opened for him during these special days.
Although it is certain that for everyone who does teshuvah they open now,
Certainly, anyone who does teshuvah at this time finds the gates opened for him,
yet all the tefillos that did not have an ascent throughout the year are likewise elevated now.
but beyond that, even the tefillos that found no ascent during the whole year are now lifted up as well.
And during these days they request in Heaven that Bnei Yisrael be aroused to teshuvah, as it is written 'The voice of my Beloved knocks: open for Me' (Shir HaShirim 5:2) — this is during these days, 'for My head is filled with dew' (Shir HaShirim 5:2).
During these days Heaven itself requests that Bnei Yisrael be roused to teshuvah, as in the verse where the Beloved knocks and asks to be let in, referring to this season when 'My head is filled with dew.'
[This is the opening of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, which are in three aspects, the gematria of 'tal' (dew, 39), as is known to the masters of understanding] — for they are days of favor.
The Sfas Emes notes that 'dew' (tal, gematria 39) hints at the opening of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in their three aspects, marking these as days of Divine favor.
Summary: The Sfas Emes builds on the Midrash that compares diligence at Hashem's doorways to a fixed mezuzah, promising that one who is steadfast there merits to receive the Divine Presence. He explains 'a door within a door' as the avodah of teshuvah, where even an opening as small as a needle's eye — the 'yud' within the 'hei' of Hashem's Name — swings the inner door open in every tefillah. The key is to stand persistently at the entrance like a fixed mezuzah, never becoming haughty when granted a little insight, but using each opening to rectify past deeds, secure that no tefillah ever returns empty. He then teaches that Elul and the Ten Days of Teshuvah are appointed days of favor when Heaven itself opens the gates and arouses Bnei Yisrael to teshuvah, elevating even those tefillos that found no ascent all year. The dew of which the Beloved speaks hints, through its gematria, at the opening of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy that define these days of ratzon.
