Brotherhood Draws Down Prophecy

Shoftim · תר"נ (1889) · Essay 1
בפסוק נביא מקרבך מאחיך כו'

On the verse, "Hashem your God will raise up for you a prophet from your midst, from your brethren" (Devarim 18:15), and so forth.

The Sfas Emes opens with the verse in which Hashem promises that He will establish a prophet for Bnei Yisrael, drawn from among their own brethren.

מאחיך פי' מתוך האחוה של כללות בנ"י זוכין לנביאים

"From your brethren" means that it is specifically through the brotherhood of the totality of Bnei Yisrael that they merit to have prophets.

He homes in on the words "from your brethren": the merit of having prophets flows specifically from the achdus and brotherhood that binds the entire Bnei Yisrael together as one.

וכ"כ תורה צוה כו' משה מורשה קהלת יעקב יתכן לפרש כמו שהתורה הוא מורשה לכלל ישראל כמו כן משה רבינו עצמו הוא ירושה לקהלת יעקב

And likewise, "Moshe commanded us the Torah, an inheritance for the congregation of Yaakov" (Devarim 33:4) — it can be explained that just as the Torah is an inheritance for all of Klal Yisrael, so too Moshe Rabbeinu himself is an inheritance for the congregation of Yaakov.

He links this to the verse describing the Torah as the inheritance of Klal Yisrael, and adds that Moshe Rabbeinu himself — not only his Torah — is bequeathed as an inheritance to the congregation of Yaakov.

וז"ש מאחיך כמוני יקים לך כו':

And this is what the verse means by "from your brethren, like myself, will He raise up for you" — that one like Moshe Rabbeinu is raised up precisely out of the brotherhood of Bnei Yisrael.

He returns to close the circle: the verse stresses "from your brethren" to teach that a leader of Moshe's stature arises only out of the collective brotherhood of Bnei Yisrael.

Summary: The Sfas Emes examines the verse promising that Hashem will raise up a prophet "from your midst, from your brethren." He teaches that prophecy is not earned by an isolated individual but is drawn down specifically through the brotherhood and achdus of the totality of Bnei Yisrael. He reinforces this with the verse "Moshe commanded us the Torah, an inheritance for the congregation of Yaakov," explaining that just as the Torah is bequeathed to all of Klal Yisrael, so too Moshe Rabbeinu himself is an inheritance belonging to the congregation of Yaakov as a whole. The repeated phrase "from your brethren" thus teaches that even a prophet of Moshe's stature is raised up only out of the collective bond of Bnei Yisrael.
