“In the Midrash: two inheritances… Jacob takes pride in his inheritance, ‘the voice is the voice of Jacob,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the Midrash that Israel has two spiritual inheritances, associated with Jacob, and especially with the inner quality called ‘voice.’
“It is difficult to understand why Israel needed to return to the level of freedom in order to split the sea.”
The question is why a renewed state of liberation was required before the miracle of the sea.
“One can explain, as the Zohar says, that the Exodus from Egypt was to free the faculty of speech from exile.”
The first stage of redemption liberated the divine expression manifest as ‘speech.’
“Likewise, afterward there was needed a redemption for the level of ‘voice,’ which is above speech.”
An additional, deeper liberation was needed: the restoration of the inner ‘voice’ beyond articulated speech.
“And there is a difference between voice and speech.”
He introduces their fundamental distinction.
“Speech is what a person can utter according to his will; speech means that a person uses his voice to express what he desires.”
Speech expresses deliberate, conscious intention.
“But the voice comes from the innermost being of a person.”
Voice reflects the deeper, essential self, prior to articulation.
“And in the inner meaning of things, ‘speech’ refers to God’s governance of all worlds, as in ‘By the word of God the heavens were made.’”
Divine speech represents the ordered expression of creation.
“This governance was hidden in exile and became revealed through the Exodus, as explained above.”
The Exodus uncovered God’s ordering power within creation.
“So too for Israel: their acceptance of the yoke of Heaven—nullifying their will before His and acting only according to His decree—is called ‘speech.’”
Israel’s obedience corresponds to the realm of divine speech.
“And so explains the Zohar on ‘You shall speak of them…’—that one governs everything according to the words of Torah.”
Speech represents alignment of action with Torah.
“After accepting the yoke of Heaven, they received the Torah, which is above speech.”
The Torah corresponds to a higher realm beyond articulated expression.
“And Israel became attached to the inner aspect of the Torah.”
This attachment touches the deeper ‘voice’ level.
“This is the ‘voice’ in which Israel takes pride.”
Their inner spiritual inheritance is the supernal voice.
“Meaning that something arising from within itself shows that the voice is uniquely Israel’s.”
The voice expresses an innate quality, not externally produced.
“And this is the meaning of ‘We will do and we will hear,’ as the Zohar says: first ‘doing His word,’ submitting oneself to His will and overcoming the evil inclination.”
Action precedes hearing: first disciplined obedience.
“Afterward one merits the ‘hearing,’ which comes without human effort.”
The hearing represents a gift of inner revelation.
“This is the meaning of ‘he takes pride in his inheritance.’”
The inner voice is an inherited quality.
“The Exodus and the splitting of the sea were preparations for these two levels.”
Exodus corresponds to speech; the sea to voice.
“‘We will do’ and ‘we will hear’—speech and voice.”
The twofold revelation mirrors the twofold inheritance.
“These correspond to the weekdays and to the holy Sabbath.”
Action belongs to the weekdays; inner hearing to Shabbat.
“For on weekdays, through permitted labor one serves God; they are called ‘days of work.’”
The weekday realm is the realm of doing.
“But on Shabbat one merits to hear without exertion.”
Shabbat reveals the inner voice effortlessly.
“And the Midrash says that the seventh day of Passover is like the holy Sabbath.”
Thus the sea-splitting day resembles Shabbat’s inner revelation.
“This is the level of voice, as above.”
Seventh day of Pesach is the revelation of voice.
“Thus, ‘You shall remain silent’—meaning no effort is needed.”
The miracle came from above, requiring silence.
“‘God will fight…’”
Divine action replaces human striving.
“This is the voice that is inherited in the inner soul of Israel.”
The inner voice is the innate spiritual root of the people.
“For when any Jew faces distress, he immediately cries out to God even without deliberation.”
The instinctive cry shows the inner voice emerging naturally.
“But if one merits that the voice comes after proper action…”
The highest form of voice comes through preparation.
“Then one merits to hear calmly.”
The voice becomes a serene inner revelation.
“But then, the voice needed to be awakened through crying out, as above.”
At the sea, the inner voice initially appeared through urgent outcry.
“The principle is that the splitting of the sea was to bring about inner attachment.”
It opened direct access to the soul’s root.
“This is why they sang afterward.”
The song arose from newfound inner connection.
“For it is beyond human reason how every individual Jew attained such things.”
Their collective spiritual ascent is inexplicable naturally.
“Only as the Zohar says: they cleaved to the root of their souls, and the inner inherited voice within Israel was awakened.”
The miracle was an arousal of the deepest spiritual core.
“And this is the meaning of ‘will sing’—that when they reached their inner level, then they sang.”
The future tense hints to automatic song arising from inner transformation.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Exodus freed ‘speech,’ while the splitting of the sea revealed the deeper ‘voice,’ the inner inheritance of Israel. Weekdays correspond to action and speech; Shabbat and the seventh day of Pesach reveal effortless hearing and inner voice. This inner voice is Israel’s unique inheritance, awakened fully when they cleaved to their soul-root and sang at the sea.
