Sanctity of the Festivals
Moedim · Divine Connection · Clarity of Mind · Jewish Identity
המועדות הם עדות לבנ"י שמיוחדין להקב"ה.
The festivals are a testimony for the Children of Israel that they are designated for the Holy One, blessed be He.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the very existence of the festivals serves as a divine declaration that Israel is uniquely bound to God. Their sanctity reflects Israel’s sanctity.
כ' עומדות היו רגלינו כו' כשהיו עולין לרגל שבטי יה עדות לישראל כו'.
As it is written: “Our feet stood…”—when the tribes of God would ascend for the pilgrimage festivals, it was a testimony for Israel.
The act of ascending to Jerusalem for the pilgrimage festivals publicly revealed Israel’s connection to God and strengthened communal awareness of this bond.
ועדות הוא לשון בירור הדעת כי המועדות נותנין דעת לכל איש ישראל לכל ימי השנה.
And ‘testimony’ implies clarification of awareness, for the festivals grant spiritual awareness to every Jew for the entire year.
The Sefat Emet explains that the festivals are not only commemorations but moments that refine and illuminate consciousness, providing inner clarity that sustains one throughout the year.
The Sefat Emet presents the festivals as divine testimony revealing Israel’s unique bond with God and as sources of renewed spiritual understanding that endures beyond the festival days themselves.
